DALE LEE ENGEL

Dale Lee Engel passed away peacefully on December 30, 2011, at The Missouri Veterans Home in Cameron, Mo. He bore his 18-year vascular illness, including the loss of a limb, with strength and class. Mr. Engel was born Aug. 8, 1929, in Abilene, Kan., to Harry Ellis and Shirley (Jones) Engel. He graduated from Salina, Kan., High School where he was an outstanding athlete in Football, Basketball and Track. He enrolled in the University of Kansas, where he played basketball for Phog Allen, lettering in 1949, '50 and '51. With a degree in Business and Accounting, he served four years in the United States Air Force in the Auditor General Section. Following his discharge, he worked for 33 years for Seidlitz Paint and Varnish Company, which later became ConChemCo, Inc., becoming its Chief Financial Officer. Dale was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and a Past President of Blue Hills Country Club. Besides golf, he especially enjoyed working with his children's athletic teams and the Boy Scouts, serving as coach and Assistant Scout Master. He also greatly enjoyed boating and fishing at the Lake of the Ozarks, to where he moved after his retirement. He served on the Board and was Mayor of the Village of Four Seasons. He also enjoyed wintering and living for a brief time in Rockport, Texas, where he was active in the Rockport Country Club. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Swanson Engel, son, Stephen L. Engel, daughter, Carol Engel Poppe, son-in-law, Thomas V. Poppe, grandchildren, Jamie and Jason Neal, Rebecca Engel, Kevin Poppe, David Poppe and Katherine Poppe, three great granddaughters, Ava, Avery and Ali Rae Neal, all of Johnson County. Also, surviving are many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Gordon Deane Engel of St. Louis, Mo. Memorial contributions may be made to the Williams Educational Fund, University of Kansas, 1651 Naismith Drive, Lawrence, KS 66045. The family wishes to thank the staffs of the Veterans Home and Comfort Care Hospice of Cameron for their excellent and loving care for the last five years. A memorial service and reception will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, at Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kan.
