Ralph Beard Obituary

One of all-time best Kentucky Wildcats remembered for quick hands, betting scandal By Jim Warren
KENTUCKY.COM

Ralph Beard, who played on the University of Kentucky’s first two NCAA championship teams and became a member of UK’s Fabulous Five only to see his basketball career ruined in a 1950s college basketball betting scandal, died early Thursday.

Mr. Beard, who recently had suffered from several illnesses, including a muscle disorder that made movement difficult, died at his Louisville home, his son Scott said. He was 79.

Mr. Beard, a speedy 5-foot-10 guard from Louisville, was noted both for his basketball skills and an aggressive style on the court. He played for Coach Adolph Rupp at Kentucky in 1946-49. As a skinny freshman, Mr. Beard sank a foul shot to help Kentucky win the 1946 National Invitational Tournament, UK’s first win in a national basketball event.

Mr. Beard then led UK to NCAA championships in 1948 and 1949. He also was a member of the 1948 U.S. Olympic basketball team — basically composed of UK’s starting five — which won the gold medal in London, England. Mr. Beard received All-America honors in 1947, 1948 and 1949 and to this day remains UK’s only three-time, consensus first-team All-American. Many viewed him as the best guard in basketball during the late 1940s and early 1950s.

But Mr. Beard’s involvement in the college basketball point-shaving scandal, which broke in 1951, tarnished his image and cut short a promising professional basketball career. He admitted taking money from gamblers but maintained all his life that he never did anything to affect the outcome of games. Still, he was haunted throughout his life by what might have been. He never played basketball again.

“Basketball was my life,” he said in a 2002 interview. “It’s what I lived for.”

Despite the lingering pain, Mr. Beard put his life back together, became a successful businessman in Louisville and built a strong marriage. In later years, he became respected and admired across the state. He was inducted into the University of Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame in 1985 but never realized his dream of becoming a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

Yesterday, many who knew or played with Mr. Beard called him a winner, on and off the basketball court.

“He was one of my heroes, just from the way he lived his life,” said nationally known sportswriter Dave Kindred, who interviewed Mr. Beard many times. “It is to the Naismith Hall of Fame’s shame that they never considered judging the man by his entire life, rather than by a mistake he made when he was 20 years old.”

Former UK Athletics Director C.M. Newton, who invited Beard back to UK in the 1980s, said, “I don’t think there’s any question that Ralph, in the era in which he played, was the best guard in either college or pro basketball.”

Said former UK teammate Wallace “Wah Wah” Jones: “He was the best guard I ever saw. He was so fast that, if you got past him, he could beat you before you got to the basket. He could shoot the two-hand set shot; he could shoot the one-hand shot going to the basket; and he was a good defensive player”.

“I’m going to miss him,” Jones said. “We had a lot of good times together.”

Former UK Coach Joe B. Hall said that, even in today’s game, Mr. Beard would be a star.

“The game hasn’t passed by Ralph Beard’s style of play,” Hall said. “He was so aggressive and competitive that even playing the way he played in the 1940s he would be an All-American today.”

Longtime UK basketball equipment manager Bill Keightley agreed.

“The game has changed a lot, but if Ralph Beard were playing today he probably would be the outstanding player in the country,” Keightley said. “They talk about quickness and reflexes, but I’ve never seen anyone with the quickness and reflexes he had.”

Keightley said Mr. Beard frequently visited UK basketball practices when he was in Lexington and would amaze young players with the quick hands he still possessed, even in his 70s.

UK Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart issued a statement calling Mr. Beard’s passing a “tremendous loss for the Wildcat family.”

“Ralph was without question one of the greatest to ever wear the Kentucky uniform. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Ralph’s family and loved ones.”

Mr. Beard was born Dec. 2, 1927, in Hardinsburg in Breckinridge County. He was a four-sport star — basketball, baseball, football and track — at Louisville Male High School, leading the Male Bulldogs to the state basketball title in 1945.

Mr. Beard actually came to UK planning to play football, but switched to basketball after an injury in his first game. It was a wise decision.

Kentucky then was entering its Golden Age of basketball, with budding young stars such as Jones and Mr. Beard, plus a stable of talented older players just returning from military service in World War II. Over the next few years, UK won almost every basketball game it played, enjoying such dominance that Mr. Beard once said Kentucky’s practices were more competitive than most of its games.

In 1948, Mr. Beard, Jones and UK teammates Alex Groza, Kenny Rollins and Cliff Barker were crowned the “Fabulous Five,” a name still renowned in college basketball history.

Jones noted that in four years playing together he and Mr. Beard won 130 or 140 games. Indeed, if not for a narrow loss in the 1947 NIT, they would have won national championships in all four years.

After Mr. Beard’s UK career ended, he joined an NBA expansion team, the Indianapolis Olympians, in which he was a part owner. He was immediately successful as a player, and was voted to the all-NBA team in 1951. Months later, however, Mr. Beard and Groza were arrested and, along with former UK teammate Dale Barnstable, implicated in the betting scandal.

Mr. Beard ultimately received a suspended sentence, but the NBA forever banned him from professional basketball and forced him to sell his share of the Indianapolis Olympians. When he tried to enter minor league baseball, a judge threatened to throw him in jail.

“It was like taking his life away from him, the game meant so much to him,” Kindred said yesterday. “Kentucky forgave him, they had him back to Rupp Arena. He became great friends with Bob Knight. The great shame is that he never forgave himself.”

Nevertheless, Kindred called Mr. Beard’s life a triumphant one.

“In the end, he’s a triumph, I don’t think there’s any question about that,” Kindred said. “He made a young kid’s mistake, and he paid for it in ways none of us will ever know. But he made a great life, had a great son, a great wife, Betty, and was a greatly respected man. I have no qualms at all in calling him a great Kentuckian.”

In addition to his son, Scott, and daughter-in-law, Tina Beard, Mr. Beard is survived by Betty Beard, his wife of 52 years.

Funeral services are scheduled for Monday at the Pearson-Ratterman Funeral Home in Louisville. Visitation at the funeral home will be on Sunday.

Ralph and I met briefly in December 1955 as we were preparing to ship out at Ft. Lewis, WA. Ralph was hoping to play for the base team but was getting nowhere with the sergeant doing the processing. "How good would I have to be to play?" Ralph asked. "Maybe like Ralph Beard," was the reply. "I am Ralph Beard," Ralph said. Unfortunately, that wasn't good enough and we shipped out on Christmas eve. Ralph did make the Camp Zama team in Japan however. A great guy and basketball player.

Old friend, it seems like yesterday when we were hanging out at William's Drug Store on Main St. in Lexington. He gave you chewing gum and you guys would turn me upside down and shake the money from my pockets. I was riding horses for Mr. Doug Davis at High Hope Farms.
That was in 1948.

I myself never had the opportunity to know Ralph or his family on a personal basis, but Ralph may have loved his Male H. S. and I as a Dupont Manual Grad, watched him in Basketball at UK and his life in the news thereafter, always knowing this man made history in Basketball prowess and in life. His family should be very proud of him as should the entire State of Kentucky.

They say that Daniel Boone and Abraham Lincoln best represented the 'spirit of Kentucky'.

(One was a pretty good shot.......and the other tall & rangy.)

But, to those of us who ever saw him in action...Rapid Ralph Beard was purely 'magic'.

And Kentucky has a right to be proud!

This is on behalf of my father William Dowell. He always talked about how good of friends he was with Ralph when they were growing up in Hardinsburg. My father is now in a nursing home in Toledo, Ohio with Alzheimers, but when I took him the article about Ralph's death, he certainly remembered him and was very sad. He talked about their childhood as if it was yesterday, his memory for the past fully intact. He just sadly shook his head and said "I just can't believe it". My dad said "I remember the store his momma and daddy had-they made the most beautiful robes and dresses in the world" and he said "he was the best basketball player you would have ever wanted to see" We send our condolences to his family.
Sincerely,
Jeannine Reilly

I as a lifetime Wildcat fan am truly sad that I didn't know of your story before you left us. I think your story gives everyone hope when things seem very hard. You never quit even when the very thing you loved the most was taken from you. I hope you get to check into the game with Rupp one more time when you finally are home. You'll always be in every Wildcats heart. God Bless you and your family.

I had met Mr. Beard on several occasions. As a Kentucky fan, I hoped to have his autograph one day but did not want to bother him by asking. Finally, I decided to ask him to sign something for me. I apologized to him and told him I did not want to bother him. He laughed and graciously signed my paper for me. I am thankful that I finally mustered up the courage to ask him for this, not because of his great talent but because I will always remember his kindness. He will be missed.

As sports editor of The Orlando Sentinel in the early 70's, I had dinner with Ralph and Bettye Beard while in Louisville for the Derby. It was the most poignant interview in a quarter-century of writing and the only time this interviewer ever shed tears. Ralph was a fabulous basketball player though small. He was a giant in character.

As a freshman at Ashland Junior College in 1948-49, I went to UK to visit my sister, Jo Harris, and was able to buy a ticket for the last game the Fabulous Five played in old Alumni Gym. Growing up in Kentucky I had always know the name, and the legend of Ralph Beard. The greatest college guard to ever play the game. It was not until I was at the University of Louisville that I had the honor to meet him and get to know him. It was an honor every time I got to speak and see him. He often stopped by practice and always made a point to say hello, and he always knew my name. He was a very humble man, and a great man. He loved the game of basketball almost s he loved his wife Bettye. I will never forget when Coach Pitino invited him to travel with us to play at Memphis. He was the perfect gentleman and guest, fifteen minutes early to everything because that was the way he was taught. After getting to know him, I never really thought of him as a basketball star, but as one of the nicest men I've ever known.

One of the great perks of covering University of Kentucky basketball has been the opportunity to get to know Ralph Beard. It was an honor any time I had the chance to visit with him at a UK game or practice. I think of C.M. Newton's often-stated line that you can't define class, but you know it when you see it. Ralph was as classy a person as I ever met and I will miss not getting another opportunity to talk basketball with him. My condolences to Ralph's family on your loss.

I will never forget going to downtown Lexington and welcoming the NCAA champs in 1948 and 1949. Ralph Beard was our hero. Every kid in Kentucky wanted to wear #12. In 1955-56, while serving in the Navy in Japan, I watched him play once again. He played for Camp Zama an Army base. Don Nuxhall (Joe's brother) a star player for USC or UCLA (as I recall) played on Camp Zama's team. Most of the military teams were made up of ex-college players. Once again, Beard dominated the game just as he dominated college basketball. In my opinion, he was the greatest player ever to wear the Blue and White.

My heart goes out to you and the family for your love of Husband, Father, Grandfather and friend. May our Lord be with you during this time and may Ralph rest in peace. I will be out of town during the visitation but will have a prayer for you this day and thereafter. John 13:1-3 B. G. Gividen

Sorry to hear about the loss. I got the previlage of meeting Ralph at a Kentucky Alumni event a few years back. He was very nice.....stuck around for hours after the event was over signing autographs and talking to the fans! Although I didn't start watching UK Bball until 1986, I really came to respect him that night. I know a lot of other ex athletes would've bolted out after the event was over, but he stuck around. He was a wonderful human being! God Bless......

betty and family,

ralph touched so many people with his thoughtfulness. Generous, always from the heart. An honor to have just been in his company.

I'll always remember those famous two handed set shots! Ralph and I sat next to each other in many classes at Male High, and also at our graduation in 1945. He was a great athlete, but also a great guy.
