A. Nancy McCormick Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 26 to Mar. 27, 2023.
Nancy McCormick, age 72 of Hilton Head Island, SC, passed away March 24, 2023 in New York City after an ongoing battle with acute myeloid leukemia.

Nancy was born Ann Barbara McCormick, on January 26, 1951 in Pittsburgh, PA. She is pre-deceased by her parents Robert Dennis McCormick and Ann Barbara Kennetz McCormick. She graduated from Fox Chapel High School with the class of 1969, and from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1973 where she met her former husband Keith Craig.

Nancy was a high school math teacher for over 45 years in Northern Virginia and Hilton Head Island. She taught at Bishop O'Connell High School, James Madison HS, Thomas Jefferson High School of Science and Technology, Wakefield High School, Hilton Head Preparatory School, and the Heritage Academy. She was also a past President of the Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics and special projects teacher in the FCPS math curriculum office.

In her youth, Nancy was an accomplished Irish clog dancer, and synchronized swimmer. She coached swimming in her early teaching career. Nancy loved time spent with family, attending theatrical performances and sporting events, and hosting game nights. During retirement, Nancy was involved in various women's and golf groups on Hilton Head Island. She also loved walking her dog Duke on the beach. Nancy was incredibly strong, having previously survived 5 other cancers in the last 8 years. She was cared for lovingly over the years by many doctors and staff at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital and shared the message "Think like a proton...always positive" with everyone she encountered.

Nancy is survived by her daughter, Jessie Craig (Michael Lewis); her siblings Bob McCormick (Patty Powers), Patrick (Karen) McCormick, John (Marion) McCormick, and Aggie McCormick (Bob) Dix; sisters-in-law Dana (Gary) Fohringer and Mel Phelabaum; nieces and nephews Patrick II, Carolyn, John Michael, Ryan, Ryan Dix, Tessa, Dan, Mike, and Stevie; many close friends and her cocker spaniel Duke; all of whom she loved very much.

A Celebration of Life reception is currently being planned and will be held in Northern Virginia. Details will be shared once finalized.

Remembering my incredible sister-in-law Nanc, who was indeed the most positive person one could ever hope to meet. I still have our last texts which at the very end of her life were telling me not to worry. I miss her a lot. Nancy has meant so much to me, as she has to many.
She was dear friend from all our schools together -
Jefferson the original school,
Madison, and TJHSST, Nancy was part of my daily teaching life. She was a wonderful colleague and math / comp Sci dept chair.
I remember her good and creative ideas about teaching , her laughter and smiles which were so warming .
Nancy was a friend to so many, we all love her very much.
I imagine now her sunsets and sunrises on her beach, walking in the sands with bare feet , and swimming in the warm waters of Hilton head.
Memories of Nancy´s lovely nature and companionship will always be with us, and with many people, all of those lucky to know Nancy

Oh Nancy, you were such a great friend of all the teachers in Fairfax County but you were a very special friend of mine. You always gave such encouragement to me and we shared many memories. I am so sorry that you had such a difficult last few years with your cancer bouts. I love you and I miss you. Becky Barnes

I knew Nancy from her time at IUP. At that time she was dating her former husband, Keith , and the two of them were regulars at our many house parties. She always added to our fun and good times. Gone way too early.

Jessie and our daughter Molly were best friends from about the minute we moved in across the street (when they were two and three) and all through their childhoods. Nancy and I also became very close.

In her last weeks, l sent Nancy a series of iPhone shots of old photo album pages, with happy memories starring Jessie and Molly and and our families and neighborhood friends.

My last words to Nancy, via text, were "Thank you for being in my life. You helped make it fun, raising our kids."

I can´t tell you just one memory of Nancy and the wonderful Mccormic family that grew up in our neighborhood along with the community swim club. Drive-in, movies, playing games out in their wonderful backyard including everyone who would want to play nobody ever excluded. Fun, loving family, strong survivors of many endeavors and just wonderful fond memories.

Nancy started her Irish dancing. I´ll be in chosen out of a group of girls while we were in a Girl Scout troop together. She became very successful at this and went on to win awards along with her other athletic endeavors.

I will remember her as a friend, with a beautiful smile and delightful blue eyes. May she be at peace now

Nancy was one of the most inspiring and naturally talented teachers ever, across the decades. Her love for her students and her ability to reach them unparalleled. It was my honor to have her as a colleague and a friend. What an exceptional and loving person. Lucky are we who were touched by her.

So many fond memories of our college days and the years that followed. I'm devastated to learn of Nancy's death. She put up a good fight through so many years. I pray she's at peace and back with her special parents.
My heartfelt condolences to her brothers and sister and to a special daughter for their undying love.

Still can't believe this beautiful positive soul is gone from us. She was my "other sister" and always found ways to help save me from the tough parts of my life. So many memories of her laughter, her joy in almost any situation, and her love of the beach. When she got the giggles, it would often spiral out of control and you were suddenly carried away with her. What an amazing gift she had. I will always miss her. My deepest sympathies to her family, friends,
and her beautiful daughter Jess. Love , mel

Mrs McCormick was our forensics drama teacher-coach. Forensics being part dramatic acting, part radio show, she encouraged our team to choose pieces that were fun to perform regardless of win or lose or appropriate for forensics. Mrs. McCormick really drove this lesson into us - if we're having fun, then we're already winning. Thank you Mrs. McCormick!

We are neighbors of Nancy at Lighthouse Tennis in Hilton Head. Nancy was such a wonderful asset to our community and we will miss her. It will be hard to look out at the pool in the afternoon and see the pool without Nancy. I always enjoyed going out to the deck, saying hi, and catching up. Nancy always put a smile on my face. She was a blessing to all of us.
