David Haskins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 4 to Feb. 5, 2023.
"I'll see you on the flipside."

So begins the story of David Scott Haskins, 68, who passed away in Roseburg, Oregon, on January 18, 2023, with his family by his side. He was born in Wichita, Kansas, the oldest son of Richard (Dick) and Noreen (nee Walker) Haskins. The family, with his younger brother (James) Kent, moved to Bakersfield, CA in 1961, when Dave was 7.

He graduated from South High School in 1972, known as an accomplished swimmer, whose records were only broken by his nephew many years later. He graduated from San Jose State with a bachelor's in Criminal Justice, proceeding his career in law enforcement.

He met and married the love of his life, Kathy Burns on June 10, 1978, and together they had one daughter, Jenna, the light of his life.

Dave fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a police officer when he joined the Bakersfield Police Department in 1976. He was known as an adrenaline junkie who enjoyed car chases, the night shift and patrol. During his career, he was promoted to sergeant, worked Robbery-Homicide, and became a lieutenant- the rank he retired as in 2005. Patrol was always his favorite!

Dave, Kathy and Jenna enjoyed camping and RV'ing with friends and family alongside dogs Molly and Sarge, and later, cat Boo, particularly spending time along the west coast chasing the most perfect sunsets. Dave and Jenna spent many weekends shooting at the range, shared a love and passion for firearms and authors, often exchanging books through the years. Later in life, Dave enjoyed collecting bourbon with son-in-law, Tom, and enjoyed sipping bourbon in front of a campfire, or spending Wednesday nights with their friends line dancing and enjoying the comradery and stories around a fire.

Dave was proceeded in death by his parents Dick and Noreen Haskins, father-in-law Bob Burns and brother-in-law Mike Burns. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Kathy, daughter Jenna (Tom) Maloney, grandchildren Brittnee and Branson Maloney, brother Kent (Gwen) Haskins, mother-in-law Rexie Burns, sister-in-law Kim (Mark) Maxwell, brother-in-law Robert (Kristy) Burns, nieces Sandra (Brandon) Nabors and Kaitlynn (Beau) Larimer, nephews James (Jeana) Haskins and Brian (Taylar) Haskins as well as great-nephews Aiden Larimer and Jameson Haskins.

A Celebration of Life has been planned for March 12, 2023, at the Winston Community Center at 4:00PM in Winston, Oregon. A dinner will follow, catered by his favorite Mexican restaurant.

Yes Dave, we'll see you on the flipside.

God bless you Dave. You were a true hero and inspiration to me.
A dyed-in-the-wool American Patriot that provided safety and comfort to so many. I will join you and sip bourbon by the fire.

Of many memories I had policing the streets of Bakersfield, catching bad guys when Dave was on duty, always seemed more fun than work. He truly enjoyed his job and enjoyed being an example for the younger cops and setting the bar of expectation. I valued his honesty, integerity and loyalty to his subordinates, for this was his gift to a profession that often times was lacking. I pray for the family's healing. God bless your family.

Super Dave made a tremendous impact on my life and career that words cannot describe it. He was a source of strength and guidance to me on how to be a good man, husband and father. I truly loved and enjoyed our times riding quads, hanging out in the garage watching movies, drinking beer and whiskey, telling stories. Sitting out in the front yard talking about the days events and enjoying each other´s company.
Your forever friend Dirk

We were absolutely stunned by Dave´s passing. He was one of the best leaders within the ranks of the BPD. He was not only a mentor but a true friend; as are you Kathy. You both held our discussions in confidence and provided welcomed support and direction. We will truly miss this Dave, but will always be here for you and Jenna. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you both.

I'm saddened to learn of Dave's passing. We attended junior high and high school together. We both participated in band and hung around with common friends. He was always positive and upbeat with a great sense of humor. May his memory be for a blessing.

A life well lived indeed. I have such fond memories of my intense time spent with Dave during our shared police academy and work together as rookie cops. If you only had one call to make when you needed help, it would be to Dave Haskins. I'll miss you until I see you again. MICHAEL MOORE

Dave was one of the nicest men I had ever met. When I was line dancing, there was not a single time we didn't shake hands when I walked into the dance hall and we did another handshake after line dancing.

If you had ever met Dave you'd never forget him. I love you buddy, god is going to be happy with you by his side.
