COLONEL FREDERICK RICHARD "DICK" MATTHEWS, Jr.

The Colonel died at his home in Canton, North Carolina, on November 22, 2023.

He was born February 2, 1940 in Honolulu, Hawaii to US Navy Commander Frederick Richard Matthews and his wife Eloise Brewer Matthews. He grew up in Michigan and finished up

high school in Greensboro, North Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina for

his undergraduate and graduate studies. Dick was in the United States Marine Corps, and served in Vietnam in the late1960's. Matthews was India Company Commanding Officer from July 1, 1967 to September 7, 1967. He had other assignments with H&S Company, Lima Company 3/3, and finally Kilo Company before leaving the Battalion and Vietnam in July of 1968.

He was proud of his career in the Marines, and enjoyed the company of other veterans. After his time in combat, he retained a position in the Marines Reserves. He settled in Chapel Hill and became a business consultant, collaborating on several successful investment ventures in the areaover the years.

He was predeceased by his wife Alice Montgomery Matthews, and his son Michael Richard Matthews. He is survived by his daughter Heather Matthews Owens, her husband Jonas Owens, and two grandchildren, Lila Spicer Owens and Ava Alice Owens of New Orleans. He is also survived by his daughter Katherine Louise Matthews in New Orleans.

An avid sailor, Dick enjoyed time in his boats on the water. He had several Golden

Retrievers in his life over the years, his last being his beloved Jubal.

The Colonel was buried in Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery, alongside his parents.

I knew Colonel Matthews for a few years in 2020 to 2021. He was a great guy with a good sense of humor. He was also well read. I am sorry to hear he passed away.
