September 15 is the patronal feast day of Our Lady of Sorrows, patroness of the Congregation of Holy Cross which Joe served with faithful dedication. May any sorrow he experienced during his journey with us on Earth be now transformed eternal joy. Frank Wagner CSC

I was just remembering the other day about how Joe looked after "Aunt Carm" so lovingly in little gestures of attentiveness...e.g. in offering her "sweet treats", which was theira code name for a little liquor added to some sweet drink. So many good memories1 Frank Wagner 2020

I still talk about Joe and his energetic and wise contribution to us when the story of the English Canadian Province of Holy Cross and our ministry in New Brunswick is raised. I wish he were around today to hep us in the challenges we face and add to the conversation his joviality and encouragement. Frank Wagner CS

Joe is a friend and confrere, especially since July 1969 when we crossed Canada and the USA in a tent-trailer with Richard Renshaw to get to know each other better and prepare for our journey East To Frederiction. Since then I have had many great moments with Joe, was inspired and supported by him, followed in his footsteps at Brock and appreciated his gift to Holy Cross as a fellow religious and in his leadership roles. May heaven be "Caton's Island" beautiful infinitely for you Joe. Frank Wagner CSC

Father Joe was a kind and caring man who helped out so many during his time at STU. He was always there when trouble times were near. He will be greatly missed. Thank you "Father Joe" for being there when I needed someone to talk to.

Like many, my friendship with Joe began while I was attending University. And a great friend he was. We kept in contact over the years. It did my heart good to find an email from Joe. That mattered so much to me.
I recall a good friend and am grateful to have known him and for what he brought into my life.
I can't help but think this world is a lesser place without you in it Joe. When I hear the song by Johnny Reid - Today I'm Gonna Try To Change The World, I will be thinking of you.
Anne and family please know you are in our thoughts and prayers.
Best regards

I got to know Joe through Newman during my STU years. He and I shared a great interest in music and he would sing along, very loudly, to all his favorites, a particular of which was Roger Whittaker. I shall dig out my old LP and play it from start to finish, in honour of 'our dear Joe'.

Joe and I spent a year together in Bennington, VT, as novices and a year of theological studies in Rome. Our paths crossed often over the years. What a wonderful man!

I want to say exactly what Sister Eleanor McCloskey has said here before me. I too was with her and Fr. Joe (then) in the RCIA sessions at St. Thomas, and there was no better a human being than He in opening, for everyone, a kind of transcendent passage-way in those sessions. I will always regret not being closer to him in these last years of his struggle with ill health. He was a deep friend to me always, encouraging me in the pathways I took in my own teachings at STU in literature and myth.

Just wanting to write of my great memory of having known Joe and worked with him at St. Thomas University in Fredericton. He had such gifts! He was funny and witty and perceptive, imaginative and a superb story-teller. It was pretty much impossible to stay in a "downer" when he was around. We took students on trips, and we involved students in liturgy planning. We organized marriage prep programs at STU. We shared our ideas of what our church might be able to become....and we tried to fashion RCIA sessions to help our students (and profs!) really think!
Thanks, Joe, for being in my journey. Rest in the joy and peace you confidently preached!
