Harold Beran Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 18, 2006.
Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial for Harold C. Beran, 79, a resident of both Bettendorf and New Braunfels, Texas, will be 11:30 a.m. Friday, October 20, 2006, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Bettendorf. Private family burial will be held in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home. There will be a Christian wake service offered Thursday at 6 p.m. at the funeral home that all are welcome to attend.
Mr. Beran died unexpectedly on Monday, October 16, 2006, at Trinity Medical Center at Terrace Park, Bettendorf.
Harold Charles Beran was born February 24, 1927, in Victor, Iowa, a son of Clarence Joseph and Philomena "Minnie" (DeMeuleneare) Beran. He was united in marriage to Madeline "Maddy" Gaffey on June 7, 1950, at St. Michael's Church in Holbrook, Iowa. He graduated from the former St. Ambrose College.
He was proud to have served our country in the U.S. Navy during both World War II and the Korean War.
He retired after over 35 years of service for New York Life Insurance Company where he had attained the designation, Charter Life Underwriter. He was past president of the Davenport Life Underwriters and a life member of the Million Dollar Round Table.
Family and friends are what Harold cherished most in his life. If Harold happened upon a stranger they were a friend by the end of the day. He loved all sports, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes. Harold also enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling and playing bridge. Golf was a very intricate part of his life and he was proud to have held his regular tee time at Duck Creek Golf Course for 50 years.
Harold was very civic minded and had volunteered for numerous organizations and boards. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church where he and a few others were instrumental in establishing the Catholic Endowment of Bettendorf, Iowa. He was also a member of Assumption High School Century Club, Knights of Columbus and Loras General Assembly Fourth Degree. He had been a Marshall for the Q.C. Open/John Deere Classic for 35 years.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife of 56 years, Maddy, Bettendorf; a daughter, Carol Longo, San Luis Obispo, California; grandsons, Bryan Barbour and Cory Barbour, both of California, and Sean Barbour, of Colorado; sisters, Lucille (Mrs. Ted) Laing, Waterloo, Iowa, and Agnes Griffin, Hudson, Florida; numerous nieces and nephews; and his best friend, Jay Shaff.
In addition to his parents a son, Robert H. Beran, September 28, 1980, and a brother, Raymond, also preceded him in death.
Memorials may be made to the Bob Beran Scholarship Memorial, the Catholic Endowment of Bettendorf, Iowa, or to a favorite charity.

I am so fortunate to have recently shared time with Harold and Maddy in Denver. We shared good conversations, dinner, and the company of family and friends. The hotel was questionable at best, but will always be a part of this special memory. Harold's positive outlook and radiant smile will be missed by all. My deepest sympathy.
