John R. Cummings, 80, of Burlington, died at 2:18 pm Friday, July 13, 2012, at the Trinity Regional Health System in Rock Island.
Born November 5, 1931, in Burlington, he was the son of Leon Raymond and Florence Rose Bulger Cummings.
John was a bookkeeper and accountant for many years at Cummings Tax Service from where he retired.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran.
He was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church where he served as an Eucharistic Minister. He gave his time to St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry and delivering meals to homes. He was a member of the Sugar Creekers Golf Group, and was an avid and respected golfer. He enjoyed going to municipal band concerts in Crapo Park on Sundays, doing crossword and Sudoku puzzles, dancing, and jazz music. He especially enjoyed his many golfing friends.
Survivors include four sisters, Rosemary Korb of Burlington, Kathleen Parmeter of Keokuk, Connie Cummings of Davenport, and Alice Luers of Sandy, UT; one brother, Tom Cummings of Quincy, IL; many nieces and nephews; his special love, Ruth Metzger of Burlington; Ruth's four children, David (Inez) Metzger of Burlington, Peggy (Dennis) Stout of Ankeny, IA, Richard (Rhonda) Rowe of O'Fallon, MO, and Jean (Mike) Schnellbacher of Danville; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Hugh, Jim and Butch, three sisters, Elizabeth Passamani, Anne Smith, and Jean Ertz, and one step-sister, Lillian Johnson.
Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends following a 5:00 PM Rosary Service until 7:00 PM Monday, July 16, 2012 at Thielen Funeral Home.
The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Cummings will be 10:00 am Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in St. John's cafeteria following burial.
Memorials have been established for the St. Vincent de Paul Society and Burlington Municipal Band.
