February 15, 1933 – March 16, 2014
It is with great sadness, that the family announces the passing of Joyce Victoria Durity at Irene Thomas Hospice (Delta, BC) on March 16, 2014. She passed away with her family at her side after a very hard fought battle with cancer. Joyce was an amazing and multifaceted woman. She was a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, wife, cousin, colleague and cherished friend to many who knew her. Joyce was born in Trinidad and Tobago on February 15, 1933 and immigrated to Vancouver, BC, Canada in1956 to study medicine at the University of British Columbia. She was an accomplished physician, skilled pianist, art and film lover, current affairs aficionado, and had a wicked sense of humor. At Simon Fraser University, where she spent most of her medical career, Joyce was a much loved and respected doctor by patients, faculty and most of all her colleagues. In retirement Joyce further indulged her love of the arts and truly enjoyed spending more time with family and friends. Joyce is survived by her sons Gordon and Patrick, grandchildren Devon and Kiah, daughter-in-law Kim, her sister Jean and her family. She will be fondly remembered as a loving, intelligent, feisty, talented and very giving person who has touched so many hearts and minds on her journey through life. A funeral service will be held at St Faith's Anglican Church 7284 Cypress Street, Vancouver, BC, Sunday March 30th at 2 pm. There will also be a Celebration of Life gathering at Cecil Green Park House, 6251 Cecil Green Park Road, UBC on Sunday April 27th from 11 am - 4 pm. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Joyce's name to the BC Cancer Foundation (www.bccancer.bc.ca).
