MANDEL, LAWRENCE H. With heartfelt sorrow, the family of Lawrence Mandel, Q.C. announce his peaceful passing on December 22, 2020, at North York General Hospital. Lawrence will be greatly missed by his dear wife of 53 years, Marjorie Mandel, his children Sloan and Carrie Mandel, his daughter-in-law Wendy Moore Mandel, his much-loved brother Dr. Sidney Mandel and sister-in-law, Mary Mandel, his grandchildren Carter Mandel, Raquel Mandel, Jolie Goldstein, Fynne Goldstein and Zachery Johns. Lawrence was adored by his late sister- in-law, Jean Dolson, his late niece, Linda Tamburro and his nieces and nephews Dr. Scott Mandel, Angela Mandel, Robyn (Dolson) Stuckless, Shaun (Dolson) Stanford, Fraser Dolson, John Dolson, as well as his broader extended family of cousins. Lawrence Mandel was an accomplished lawyer and long-serving senior partner and Managing Partner at Thomson Rogers, one of Ontario's most prominent personal injury firms. He joined the firm in 1961 and pursued a distinguished career spanning 50 years, retiring as Senior Partner in 2011. Lawrence earned his BA in 1958 and LLB in 1961 from the University of Toronto, where he won the Tracey Award in Philosophy of Ethics. He was a lecturer with the Law Society of Ontario, a teacher of the Bar Admission Course, and a published author of numerous articles related to the practice of litigation. Lawrence was also a Director and Treasurer of The Advocates Society and a member of The International Academy of Trial Lawyers. Lawrence was a role model and mentor to many generations of lawyers, including his beloved son, Sloan Mandel and daughter-in-law, Wendy Moore Mandel. He will also be missed by thousands of colleagues, friends and former students who he helped and inspired. Lawrence was a musician and band leader, jazz afficionado, world traveller, journalist, fitness buff and Judogi. Toronto born, with an adventurous spirit and curiosity about the world, he traveled to numerous countries throughout his life. From 1964-65, he covered the Vietnam war as an in-country journalist. He and Marjorie continued to enjoy travelling extensively throughout their marriage. Lawrence was passionate about his family and his career, and lived a life of high integrity, humour and dedication. He was a fighter and longtime Parkinson's Disease survivor. In his final days, battling Covid-19, he asked his children to "take the file from here."
