Maria de Eyre Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 24, 2025.
With great sadness we announce the passing of Maria Rose (Boniferro) de Eyre on January 22nd. She left the world peacefully and surrounded by her family. Words cannot express how much she will be missed. Whether you knew her as an amazing mother, the "best Nonna ever," a big sister, beloved aunt, cherished friend, or dedicated choir member, Maria touched the lives of everyone who knew her.

Maria was born on November 30th, 1950 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. She was the eldest of eight children in a loving, tight-knit Italian family - all ten of them living together in a small house on the east side of the Soo. She left to earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Western Ontario, and graduated in 1973. Maria had a long and impactful career as a nurse. She worked in public health, taught nursing, worked as an occupational health nurse, and oversaw disability management with the Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board.

She met the love of her life, David, in the late 1970s and they began a life together in Port Credit. They raised three sons together: Michael, Christopher and Steven. Their lives were filled with boating adventures, rambunctious kids, and frequent get-togethers and travel with friends and family.

While David's sudden passing in 2007 changed her life's course, Maria was fulfilled in her later years watching her six grandchildren grow, and she treasured the time she was able to spend with them. "Nonna" was a constant uplifting and inspiring presence in her grandchildren's lives, with daily video calls and regular Sunday family dinners at her home.

Maria lived her life to the fullest and had many interests, including cooking, games, and music. She loved her book club, her volunteer work, and especially her choir. She sang with her heart, and in doing so, she made the world a sweeter, more beautiful place.

In recent months, Maria's congestive heart failure symptoms started to accelerate. Although her health was in decline, she was determined to spend the holiday season with her family and enjoyed a fun and lively Christmas together with all six of her grandkids packed into her hospital room.

Maria is survived by her three sons and their wives: Michael and Maja, and their children Elliot and Ainsley; Christopher and Margeaux, and their children Valerie and Felix; and Steven and Emily, and their children Rex and Annabelle. She also leaves behind her siblings and their spouses: Stan & Petra, Stephen & Nancy, Ann, Jim & Cathy, John & Pamela, and Paul, as well as many cherished cousins, nieces, and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband David, her parents Albert and Rita (Greco) Boniferro, and her brother Albert.

A celebration of Maria's life will be held on Wednesday, January 29th 2025 from 2:00 - 4:00 PM at the Waterside Inn in Port Credit (15 Stavebank Rd. S, Mississauga).

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Maria's memory to the Heart Function Clinic of Trillium Mississauga Hospital, or to Voices Rock Canada. Donations to both charities can be made through this link: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/pages/in-loving-memory-of-maria-de-eyre/

While life will never be the same without her, we know that she's finally back sailing with David, sharing a rum & coke. Though our hearts are heavy with her loss, we find comfort in knowing that her love and comforting nature will remain with all of us. Her song will play on.

Maria was a dear friend. She was a very active member of Caring and Sharing, a local Mississauga charity and a long standing member of the Port Credit Zone. She had a generous heart and will be dearly missed.

The Ambiance Singers and members of the Earl Nelham Singers express to Maria´s family and friends our sincere condolences. Mary Lou a past member expressed this beautiful sentiment "you and I know the value of artistic expression in our lives and while it is sad to see another voice stilled, we can continue to be thankful that we sang and we sang together with joy!" Maria "thanks for the memories ".

I hadn´t seen Maria in years but was delighted to see her YouTube video making cappelletti. I told her so and we briefly talked about visiting on the West Coast. Wished we had followed up on that...My condolences to her loving family.

I can´t believe she´s gone. I´ve known Maria since our days in Dufferin-Peel and since her retirement she´s been both neighbour and friend. She was a warm and infinitely kind person who helped me through my grief when my husband David passed suddenly, young, as her David had years before. Book club was full of laughter and our dinners full of talk of her sons, daughters in law and grandchildren. Maria knew how to show love and kindness and she´ll be greatly missed.

I first met Maria in 1984. I was driving up Fletcher Valley Crescent towards home with my youngest child Mark in the back seat. Suddenly I spotted a young woman walking along with 3 tiny boys in tow. The oldest, (Michael) looked about Mark´s age and I thought he might be a prospective playmate. I stopped the car and got out and introduced myself. Sure enough, the De Eyre family had recently moved into the neighbourhood. We instantly became friends as did the boys. We used to joke that Mark fit right in with the DeEyre kids, even looked a bit like them! Over the years the boys have grown up, had families of their own and we have all had full full and happy lives. Maria and I have never lost our connection and as late as last weekend were exchanging our Wordle scores. So many happy memories of our 40 plus years of friendship. I will miss you so much my friend!

I offer my sincere condolences to Maria´s family . Maria was part of my staff in her role of Manager of Health Promotion and Wellness in Dufferin - Peel. Maria was an excellent manager who was very knowledgeable in her field. She supported the employees who needed help and followed all board policies to ensure her department was effective in promoting health and wellness in the board . I admired her strength of character as she provided her leadership in her demanding role in the Board. Maria was always confident in any decision that she recommended to myself and the board.
It was an honour to have Maria as part of my staff in Employee Relations .
May she rest in eternal peace .

I feel so lucky to have had the chance to get to know Maria in the past year and spend some time with her. What always stood out to me was the love that she had for her sons, their partners, and her grandchildren. She cherished Sunday dinners with them so much. She also always showed such compassion and concern for her friends and family. She shared great stories and demonstrated such an incredible passion for the arts and music. Her attitude in the face of health challenges was inspiring. I will miss our chats and her humour. My condolences to the whole family.

One of a kind...my rock! Not only my sister but best friend, confidant, nuturor, life coach, always had my back, no questions asked. There´s a big Wizard game going on up there right now and a bunch of rum and cokes being poured....lots of rum...splash of coke! Beatles, rod stewart. Joni Mitchell songs blasting. Love you Maria!
