Mark Walden Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 17, 2024.
Mark Kevin Walden, 66, of Bargersville, Indiana, passed away on December 9, 2024, from chronic illness. Born on February 21, 1958, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Cebert and Vada (Johnson) Walden, Mark lived a life filled with service, adventure, and a deep love for music and racing.

After graduating from Warren Central High School (1976), Mark proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, where he served as a Aircraft Mechanic. Upon his return to Indianapolis, Mark continued to work hard, including a stint at a gas station and as a manager at Howard Johnson.

In 1981, Mark married Maggie Burton. Together, they moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he attended Spartan Aeronautics School. After graduation, they returned to Indianapolis, and Mark began his career as an airline mechanic at American Trans Air (ATA). He rose to the position of inspector supervisor and played a pivotal role in unionizing ATA, serving as Union President for 870 members. In 2004, Mark became a contractor with the US Navy, specializing in non-destructive weapon testing at Crane Naval Base.

In 2001, Mark married Barbara, a retired Chief Petty Officer from the US Navy. Over their 25-year marriage, they shared a love for the Indianapolis Colts, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, travel, concerts, wine festivals, and quiet evenings at home.

Mark's passions were many. He was an avid music fan, attending over 60 concerts, including legendary acts like Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, the Allman Brothers Band, and Supertramp. He was a skilled negotiator, often sharing stories of his union organizing efforts. Racing was his ultimate love, and he traveled extensively to witness high-speed thrills throughout the United States. His military and airline careers allowed him to explore the world, visiting countries such as England, the Philippines, Scotland, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, and Japan.

Mark was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara Walden, his brothers Larry and Michael Walden, and his parents.

He is survived by his two daughters: Lacy (Matt) O'Malley, and Cassie (Catharine) Walden, along with two grandsons, Lincoln and Dylan O'Malley. He is also survived by his siblings Barbie (George) Mayle of Centerville, IN, Sheila (Pete) Brown, of Tarpon Springs, FL, and Dale (Donna) Walden, of Owensboro, KY, and their families, including 10 nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Indianapolis, as per Mark's wishes.

Sad to see like minded friends pass. Only wish we could have known one another better because we had so much in common while we knew each other and worked toward the same goals at ATA. Rick Wolfersberger

I was his little sister , I called him Mawk for years. He would let me play Hot Wheels with him, and we would ride bikes for hours around our neighborhood. We often would play baseball with neighborhood kids, or play in a creek at the end of our street. He took good care of me, he was kind. As adults, our lives took different paths, however, we stayed close. When my parents got older, he was there with my sister to help, my parents were very proud of him, rightfully so. He had unconditional love for his girls, and enjoyed being a grandpa. His absence has created a hole in my heart that sadly I know won´t ever be repaired. I will honor you by remaining a Colts fan and forever an Indy 500 supporter. Additionally, I will always donate to Toys for Tots, love always.

I met Mark on my first day of school at Spartan School of Aeronautics in 1982. We shared every class for 2 years. Mark was several years older and had already served in the Marines. He helped me to stay focused and navigate through the tough years of full time school and work. I will always be grateful for my good friends Mark and Maggie. I can still hear that frickin´ awesome Hoosier accent and laugh of Marks! My condolences to Marks family.

Mark was a role model and mentor for me in my early days at ATA. If not for Mark, I probably never would have gotten a job there and never would have gone on to see and do the things I have in my professional life. My condolences to the whole family.
