Melanie Pozez Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 29, 2023.
Melanie Pozez, beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, philanthropist, activist and friend died May 27, 2023 at her home in Los Angeles. Melanie was born August 4, 1950 in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Shaol and Evie Pozez. A veritable Jewish Francis of Assisi, Melanie rescued thousands of animals from peril and neglect. Much of her time was spent in political causes where she passionately championed the rights of the disadvantaged including the homeless. A friend to all whom she met, Melanie amplified our sense of what it is to be human. She operated with a rare compassion and dignity: kindness and generosity were the organizing principles of her world; family and friends kept her world turning. Throughout her life she was a proud supporter of Israel.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband Jay by almost a year to the day.

She is survived by her sons Shawn and Jason Blumberg, her daughters-in-law Lauren George and Sara Sanchez, her grandchildren Maxwell and Sidney Blumberg, Arlo and Alma Blumberg-Sanchez. She is also survived by her loving siblings Bill Pozez, Shelley Pozez and Robin and Mitch Pozez. She was extraordinarily close with her nieces Kerri Schneider and Leah Shoval and their families.

Her family and friends are devastated by this great light going out.

Instead of flowers, the family asks that you make donations to the following organizations: Shelter Hope (Dedicated to Connecting Pets and People) https://shelterhopepetshop.org and PATH (People Assisting the Homeless) https://epath.org

A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm on Tuesday May 30, 2023 at Mount Sinai Memorial Parks and Mortuaries, 5590 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles, California.

There will be a meal of condolence immediately after the funeral and then shiva on Wednesday and Thursday from 4-8pm. For details, please text Melanie's son, Jason at (312) 342-4513 for location details.

Melanie I miss you and think of you all the time. The world was a better place with you and jay in it! You are my Angel taking care of Mrs. P and Fricke and me when we all needed it most. The twinkle in your eye said it all - authenticity, courage, love - chutzpah! I'm working hard to make you proud. To your family - sending good vibes your way - your mother was extraordinary - what character looks like! Melanie can you hear me! You are always missed and forever in my heart, RIP beautiful! Hugs and love!

I stumbled upon Melanie's obituary on accident and was so sad. I was Jay and Melanie's attorney in Chicago and a huge part of my early career. They were true pioneers on the west side of Chicago and wouldn't believe if they saw it today. In addition they were marvelous friends and though we lost touch many years ago, they will remain a fond memory for the rest of my life. If any of their family reads this, please accept my belated condolences. Brad Gerber

Too many years have gone by since I saw Melanie. We were in school together and I would spend the night at her house sometimes. I always enjoyed her friendship. Sorry to hear of her passing!

Dear family,
We are so saddened to learn of Melanie's passing.
We have fond memories of living on Redbud Lane in Topeka and sharing good times together. Your family were exemplary leaders in the Jewish community and will always be remembered.

With love,
Bill & Sonnie Rudnick

Helen & I are so sorry to hear about Melanie. I have known the family since 1988, and have had the pleasure of arranging travel for Melanie, Jay, and the family over the years. And dogs, too.

Melanie's devotion to the animal world was exceeded only by her love of family. Many of her trips were to visit her mother, her brother Bill, and of course, the extended Blumberg family in NYC.

But I will most remember Melanie for her unmitigated kindness. A few years ago, I don't think she had even met my son Andrew when I mentioned that he would soon be moving to LA.

Melanie and Jay insisted that Andrew stay with them, while he looked for a place to live. They looked after him and guided him in ways I only wish I could.

Andrew will meet the family tomorrow. So sad it is under these circumstances.
