Michael Corbin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 2, 2024.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Robert Corbin, a devoted husband, father, educator, writer, and advocate on June 24, 2024, at home with his son and wife.

Born on July 12, 1964, Michael was a dedicated and passionate educator who spent 14 years teaching English at Baltimore City public high schools. He also made a significant impact as a GED educator at the Maryland Penitentiary, helping countless individuals achieve their educational goals.

Beyond his teaching career, Michael was a prolific writer and blogger. His well-researched, insightful, and award-winning writings published in the now defunct City Paper and Urbanite, as well as online in Medium and The Baltimore Sun, demonstrated an unwavering commitment to social justice and education. He received a grant from the George Soros Open Society Foundation to blog about the high school to prison pipeline and high school and prison reform. His work resonated internationally and served as a voice for change. Michael also advocated for better choices, access, care, and support for Home Hemodialysis patients, championing with fervor and compassion for true patient-centered care.

Michael was thoughtful, kind, funny, a great listener, a romantic, and very active, but he did not suffer fools lightly. He loved to read and to discourse, habits sealed in his undergraduate and graduate American Studies and Education programs at the University of Maryland, College Park, the University of Minnesota, and the Johns Hopkins University.

Later in his career, Michael turned his hand successfully to consulting and contracting and ended his career as a proposal and media writer for New Wave Telecom & Technologies, Inc.

Michael is survived by his wife of 24 years, Ashley Durham Corbin; his son, Elias Corbin a Community School Coordinator in Philadelphia; his father, Robert Corbin of Bowie, MD; Stepmother Donna Rodney; brother Craig Corbin; sister Carrie Hibler; seven beautiful nieces and a steadfast nephew; his companionable Labrador Darwin; and so very many dear friends, colleagues, and extended family. Michael's legacy of kindness, dedication, and advocacy will live on through the countless lives he touched.

Michael was not one for pomp and circumstance, and preferred intimate conversations and small gatherings. There will be a celebration of his life and legacy out in nature later this year. Michael loved his garden and we always had flowers and plants in our home. Additionally, Michael supported many causes including, Amnesty International https://www.amnesty.org/en/donate, Clean Water Action https://cleanwater.org, Planned Parenthood https://www.weareplannedparenthood.org, and Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle https://lbsbaltimore.com/invest/donate/.

Michael will be deeply missed, but his memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Dear Craig, Carrie, Ashley, Elias, and family,

I have such wonderful memories of Mike from childhood in Riverdale when we were neighbors and friends. His obituary and the guest book entries, all the great comments on the Kudos Board online from his students and colleagues, and the people he touched and impacted are a beautiful tribute to the incredible life Mike lived. It has been such a long time since we have seen each other, but please know you are all in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. May God bless you all.

With deepest sympathy, love, and friendship,
Vince and Laura Pati

Michael was an immense force of good in the world. He saw me when I couldn't see myself. He listened. He was kind. He was gentle soft soul. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to cross paths with such a wonderful human. May his memory forever be a blessing.

To One of the Greatest Educators that I've ever known, my condolences to his family and friends. Mr. Corbin wasn't my teacher and definitely frightened me in 9th grade. I was like, "Thank God I don't have his class!" But as time went on, I gravely grew to regret that thought. Just having snuck in one of his poetry rec classes, he introduced me to, "The Rose that Grew from the Concrete". It was a book of poems written by Tupac Shakur. I wasn't much into reading or writing poems. I wasn't able to put it down until I finished it. That's the kind of teacher he was. He got me into wanting to read more. I wanted to participate, but realized they put me in the wrong class. So I didn't get to go back, but his classroom seemed like a safe place. If you weren't in his class, you couldn't come in. It was like a mystery to me. Every one seemed to be closer that was in his class. Maybe it was the crazy amount of homework I would hear about lol. But I don't know, people came out of his class, seemed like the Breakfast Club. People that might have sat far away from each other in the cafeteria, would elope to have lunch together in his room. He was always protective of his students he had in his class-even during the riot. He might have not been my teacher, but he definitely made an impact on me. As I now raise a son going into high school, I pray he has a Corbin beside him. Pushing him, believing in him and wanting him to be the very best version of himself that he could be. Your memory will never die. RIP Corbin

My condolences to his family. Mr. Corbin was an amazing educator. I wish I had been privileged to have home for 4 years. However he truly was a master of his craft. The way he engaged us in English really showed his love for the written word. He will most definitely be missed.

My sincerest condolences to Mr. Corbin´s family and loved ones. This man meant so much to so many people and I am blessed to have known him. Mr. Corbin taught me so much about social justice and how important it is. He also taught me that reading and writing is powerful, it´s healing, and it´s necessary. He helped to foster my love for literature and he made me laugh daily while doing so! Much like my father he was pretty no nonsense but somehow he vibed with us teenagers just fine. I love you Mr. Corbin and to his family, thank you for sharing him.
