Robert Barlow Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 22, 2025.
Robert H. "Bob" Barlow, age 92, the beloved husband of the late Joan Sheridan Barlow, passed away peacefully at his home in Stratford, Connecticut, on February 12, 2025.

Born on February 2, 1933 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, Bob was the son of the late Henry J. and Marion (Maslowsky) Barlow. He was raised in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1953 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Following graduation, he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force and served at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, New York. It was there that he met Joan Sheridan, with whom he shared 48 wonderful years of marriage.

After his military service, Bob began a distinguished 42-year career with Sikorsky Aircraft in Stratford. He contributed to numerous helicopter programs for the U.S., Greek, and Taiwanese militaries, as well as Sikorsky's commercial ventures. His work took him to 25 countries and sparked a lifelong love of travel and cultural exploration.

In retirement, Bob continued to travel extensively-visiting more than 30 countries-and documented his journeys through detailed photo journals. A devoted reader, he was a familiar face at the Stratford Library and proudly shared his annual "Books Read List" with his children and grandchildren. He also served on the Board of Trustees at The College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York, where he established a scholarship in Joan's memory.

Bob is survived by his children: Mark Barlow; Christopher Barlow and wife Deborah; Robert Barlow and wife Susan; James Barlow and wife Carolyn; and Sara Van Etten and husband Andy; as well as grandchildren Andrew, Amanda, Alexander, Hannah, Annaliese, Samantha, and Robert John ("Jack"); and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Richard Barlow and sisters Geraldine Smalley and Dorothy Mazzella.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., meeting directly at St. Mark Church, 500 Wigwam Lane, Stratford. Burial will be private.

The Adzima Funeral Home, 50 Paradise Green Place, Stratford, has been entrusted with arrangements.
