Captain Ron Johnson USN Retired

1935 - 2022

Ron Bucky Johnson passed away January 9, 2022, after a short illness.

Born in Santa Barbara in 1935, Ron moved to Santa Maria as an infant. His childhood, according to him was idyllic. He graduated from Santa Maria High School in 1953, where he was a member of the swim team with lifelong friends, Pat, Richard, Bob and Glenn.

After graduating from Allan Hancock College, he joined the US Navy. He was sent to Pensacola Florida for flight training where he earned the gold wings of a Naval Aviator. His Navy career involved many cruises, including 2 tours in Viet Nam. Later, he became the Commanding Officer of VF-92 flying F-4 Phantoms and VF-211 flying F-14 Tomcats, which was based at Miramar Naval Air Station, San Diego, CA. During his 25-year Naval career he logged over 4,000 flying hours.

Upon retirement from the US Navy, he was hired by Northrop Corporation where he worked on the development of the B-2 Stealth Bomber, a project he was proud to participate in. After leaving Northrop, he returned to Santa Maria.

Returning back to his old hometown allowed him to reconnect to many of his old friends. He became involved with the Santa Maria Museum of Flight as a docent and member of the board. He also enjoyed being part of the Elks Lodge 1538, the SMHS Alumni Association where he held the position of Vice President, the Men's Club and several other groups. He thoroughly loved his retirement in Santa Maria.

Ron was proceeded in death by his parents Walter and Olive (Hiller) Johnson, sister June, and brothers Bill and Dan. He is survived by his wife of 60 years Mary (Finical), daughters Martha and Anne, son-in-law Jon and grandchildren Sarah and Joseph. He also leaves behind his big brother Jim and his family, along with many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Ron at the Santa Maria Museum of Flight on March 13th at 1pm.

Burial will be held at Miramar National Cemetery.
