Sandra Weinstein Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 1, 2024.
Sandra Weinstein was born on March 11, 1937 and passed away on September 22, 2024 at the age of 87 after a serious illness.

She was the beloved wife of Barnet Weinstein, mother of Steven Weinstein (Cambridge, MA) and Andrew Weinstein (Israel), grandmother of Hadar, Yehuda, Shira, Micha, and Shimon (Israel), great-grandmother of Amit, Yahav, and Shaked, sister of Jack Taymore (Salem, MA), and the devoted daughter of the late Melvin and Adele Taymore.

Sandy grew up in Revere and Swampscott, MA, graduating from Swampscott High School in 1954. She graduated from Boston University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1958, and married Barney the same year. She did volunteer work at soup kitchens and summer camps while her children were young and then provided invaluable administrative help in the early days of Barney's new company, Bass Products. Sandy went on to receive an MA in Counseling Psychology from Lesley College in 1984, after which she practiced as a family therapist for several years. She was president of Temple Emanuel in Marblehead from 1996–1998, and later joined Temple Emanuel in Andover. She was a lifetime member of both Hadassah and the Jewish Heritage Center of the North Shore, where she also served as director.

A kind, perceptive, and loving woman, she knit beautiful sweaters and afghans for her children and grandchildren, nephews and nieces. She was a wonderful listener and supportive friend. And she loved talking about her two boys, of whom she was so very proud.

Sandy and Barney raised their family in Marblehead, MA, where they resided for over forty years. In 2007 they moved to Boston, where they enjoyed a rich cultural life of concerts and theater, spending summers in Lenox to attend performances and lectures at Tanglewood. They recently moved to Lasell Village in Auburndale, MA.

The funeral took place on Thursday, September 26, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Temple Emanuel, Andover, MA. A committal service followed at Temple Emanuel Cemetery, Lawrence, MA.

Nana, as a child, I remember how excited my siblings and I were every time you and Papa visited. You and Papa came about once a year, always with a suitcase full of the best presents. When I was young, you taught me how to knit, bringing the most beautiful yarns, which I still keep to this day. Each of us received a gorgeous knitted blanket from you as children, and when I had my own children-your great-grandchildren-you made the most beautiful, tiny blankets for them too.

You were such a cool grandmother, and I was always so proud of you. Living in the city, going to concerts, taking courses, and being part of a book club-you were so vibrant. Your taste and style were so good. Even on our Zoom calls (that we start to have during COVID), you always dressed up.

I admire the positive outlook you had, how you always managed to find a good angle in every situation. You were such a people person, always remembering details and asking about our cousins from Mom´s side and our friends.

I miss you so much.
Love, your granddaughter,
Hadar

Sandy was our dear friend and neighbor for several years. We will miss her pleasant demeanor and kind face. We always felt better after talking with her. Our prayers and thoughts are with Barney and her family.

My sisters and I are very sad. Sandy was a wonderful person who was a great listener. She was truly interested in how everyone was and what we were all doing. I actually babysat for her sons, my cousins when they were young. She and my mother were very close and always stayed in touch.
I haven´t seen her very much since I moved to Vermont but she always wanted to know how things were going and asking about our children. My mother, Greta and Sandy were great friends as well as her relative.

She was loved by her family and friends and will be missed.
