Verna Mae Hyrne Eldridge
1920-2007MOREHEAD - Verna Mae Hyrne Eldridge, age 86, of Oney Hollow, Morehead, Kentucky, died Sunday, October 21, 2007, at her residence.Born December 7, 1920, in Lewis County, Kentucky, Verna was the daughter of the late Charles Robert and Minnie Swearigan Hyrne. She was preceded in death by two older sisters, Elizabeth Carver and Flora Clark, and one brother, Robert Hyrne. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Roscoe Eldridge, whom she married July 1, 1943. They had one daughter, Betty Pugh of Morehead; two grandchildren, Theodore Eldridge and Nancy Nickell, both of Morehead; and three great-grandchildren, James Eldridge, Kara Nickell, and Taryn Nickell.Other survivors include two brothers, Homer Hyrne of Lynchburg, Ohio, and James Hyrne of Columbus, Ohio; one sister, Mae Burchett, of South Bloomfield, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews.Verna retired as a custodian from Morehead State University in 1984, after working 17 years. She was a hard worker until the last few years when ill health slowed her down. She was a hard task master when it came to cleanliness and orderliness around her home. She was a faithful church-goer and she loved to feed and take care of the Baptist Church people. She was a loving and supportive wife, a wonderful mother and grandmother. Verna was a shy, quiet person in social gatherings, but for those she cared for, she loved to tease and act like she was mad at them when they greeted her. She will be missed by many friends and relatives. We believe she is “resting in peace.” Funeral services were conducted 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 23, 2007, at Northcutt and Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Gary Adkins, Estill Hamilton, and Danny Belcher officiating. Burial followed in the Eldridge Cemetery on Bullfork Road. Pallbearers were Theodore Eldridge, James Eldridge, and nephews.Visitation was 5 p.m. Monday, October 22, 2007, and a special service was held at 6:30 p.m. Monday with Gary Blevins, Ira Adkins Jr. and Willis Tolliver officiating.Northcutt and Son Home for Funerals is caring for arrangements.View or sign guestbook at www.northcuttandson.com
