William Murray Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 5, 2010.
BARNSTABLE — William A. Murray of Barnstable, Massachusetts, died on Wednesday, February 3, 2010, surrounded by his loving children and grandchildren.

William was born in Quincy, Massachusetts, to the late John J. and Genevieve Murray. William was married for 53 years to the late Martha T. Murray. Bill was the proud father of 10 children and survived by:

John and Kay Murray of Franklin, Mass., Kate and Stan Fisher of Middleboro, Mass., Timothy and Paula Murray of Cincinnati, Ohio, Maryann and Bill Metcalf of Falmouth, Mass., Regina and Bill Cannon of Bridgewater, Mass., Paula and Bob Strand of Bridgewater, Mass., Joseph and Mary Murray of Marshfield, Mass., Martha Murray of Bridgewater, Mass., Brendan and Carlene Murray of Loveland, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his dear son, William "Billy Boy" Murray.

Bill was Bumpa to 22 grandchildren and five great-grandsons. He was a very special grandfather to his Courtney Ellen Murray. He also leaves many friends in Barnstable Village who took great care of him after the loss of his wife, Martha.

Bill was raised in Quincy and attended North Quincy High School. Bill served in the Navy during WWII. William and his late wife, Martha, raised their family in Brockton and he worked most of his life at two jobs to support his brood. He served one term as an aide to Congressman Brian Donnelly and completely enjoyed his time meeting Massachusetts politicians. He retired to Barnstable 28 years ago and quickly fell in love with Sandy Neck. Bill's pride and joy for many years was his infamous "dump run." Bill was known by many, some may have known him as Mr. Murray, Bill, Red, Pinky or Bumpa. However you knew him, you knew he was a loyal and generous friend. He was a fixture at the Dolphin restaurant in Barnstable Village for his morning and afternoon coffee and the family would like to extend their thanks and love to owner Nancy Smith for her years of care and friendship.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Barnstable Fire Fighters Association Relief Fund, P.O. Box 94, Barnstable, MA 02630. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the Barnstable Fire Department for their care and professionalism which was extended to both Bill and Martha during their illnesses.

Please join his family and friends as they celebrate a life well lived at Doane, Beal and Ames Funeral Home 160 W. Main St. Hyannis on Sunday February 7, 2010, from 12 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Bill was a dedicated member of the Sacred Heart Chapel in Yarmouthport and funeral services will be held there on Monday, February 8, 2010, at 10 a.m. Burial will be private at a later date.

Bill was a great friend to the Tolan family during our years in Barnstable and Sandwich. My children were fascinated that Bill would arrive for the trash in his truck and drive up on the lawn. We told the kids to be careful when Bill came, and one time after he left, our son Ben said proudly, "I survived Bill's truck!" Bill, you were a true original, and we'll miss you!

Sorry to hear about your Dad. And I wish I could be there with you - for many reasons, but surely to listen to all the great stories (and add a few myself). Bill Murray was one of those "larger than life" guys. The world was surely a better place because of Bill Murray. God Bless!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the community of Barnstable, Ma which adopted my parents 28 years ago and never let them go. Especially since our Mom died, the love, support and friendship that you heaped upon Bill did not go unnoticed and is greatly appreciated. Bill was born in Quincy, raised his family in Brockton but his home was in Barnstable because of all of you, to us Barnstable Village defines the word Community.

We were very sorry to hear that your Dad ( Bumpa ) passed away.
Although we are in Florida, please know our thoughts & prayers are with all of you.

Very Sincerely,
Mike, Donna & Ashley Atkins
