Paul Chitwood Obituary

Paul E. Chitwood, Jr.

Louisville - Paul E. Chitwood, Jr. was a retired Asst. Principal at Durrett High School and prior to that worked as a chemist at Frankfort Distilleries. He was born in Louisville and graduated from Male High School. Paul obtained B. S. (Biology) and M. A. (Education) degrees from Western Kentucky University. During the Second World War, from 1942-45, he served with distinction as a Medic with the 175th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division of the U. S. Army, seeing intense action in France, Belgium, and Germany and was awarded two Bronze Stars for bravery and a Purple Heart.

He was a faithful member of St. Matthews Methodist Church since 1940.

Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine S. Chitwood, whom he married in 1942.

Since his retirement in 1980, he has enjoyed many cruises and much travel both at home and abroad. He was an avid bridge player, playing up until age 96. Throughout his life, his family remained his focus and he served as a true inspiration to all who knew him.

He is survived by two sons--Paul E. (Tad) Chitwood III and Joseph Brian Chitwood (Sally), two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren (plus one on the way).

Visitation will be 5p.m.-8 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2018 at Ratterman's Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Rd. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 2, 2018 also at Ratterman's.

I did not know Mr. Chitwood personally, but I had the pleasure of speaking with him over the phone many years ago regarding a school ring I found in Florida from Louisville Male High School, which was believed to have belonged to Mr. Chitwood. After mailing the ring to him, I never received a response, but was happy to have hopefully returned it to its rightful owner. My belated condolences to the family of Mr. Chitwood, may he Rest In Peace. Sincerely, Stephanie H.

We are so very sorry we didn't know that Mr. Chitwood had passed, please know that we always enjoyed living next door to him. He had a long life and was so active until his last few years I always enjoyed running into him at Krogers. He and your mother were very patient with my family when we moved here in 1986 with 4 boy ages 16 to 3. Not every empty nesters would have been so kind. Let me know if we can do anything to help out. I went to Durrett High and remember Mr. Chitwood with fond memories ... I later worked with his son who would keep me caught up on his shenanigans ... I am sure he is at peace and God the Father welcomed him home with, hello my good and faithful son!Ma Donna (Conrad) White
