He was the husband of Alice G. (Stacy) Newell, who died Feb. 24, 1994.
He was born in Lowell, Nov. 9, 1915, son of the late Henry J. and Sarah (McNulty) Newell. He attended Lowell schools.
Mr. Newell served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 2675 Regiment Allied Command APO 364 in North Africa, Italy and Europe. He was in battles and campaigns from Tunisia, Sicily, Naples, Foggia, Rome, Arno and the North Appenines Valley. He received the American Defense Service Medal and the European, African and Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Walker Rogers Post #662.
Before retiring, Mr. Newell was employed by the city of Lowell Parks and Recreation Department. Previously, he was a truck driver for Dana Trucking and Wright Trucking. He was a member of Teamsters Union Local #49.
He is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Carole (Benoit) Malarkey of Lowell, Dorothy and Roy McGaunn of Hudson, N.H., and Francine and Dana Rodricks of Lowell; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Henry J. and Patricia Newell of Chelmsford, and Harry J. Newell of Westford; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was also father of the late Ruth F. Martel and Frances A. "Susie" Newell, grandfather of the late Martin Martel, and brother of the late Henrietta Dawson, Helen Cregg, Bernice Doherty, Dorothy Cox and Harold J. Newell.
