Gordon M. Lewis, age 87,transitioned, February 13, 2022. Family will receive friends on Friday, February 25, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. at Cornerstone Pentecostal Church, 2143 Joyce Avenue, Columbus, OH 43219.
Gordon Miller Lewis, Sr. was born on September 29, 1934 to the late Gordon C. and Bessie M. Lewis in Butler County in Hamilton, Ohio. He was the oldest child of this union. After the early death of his mother, Bessie, he was raised by George and Marie Thompson in Columbus, Ohio. He had an adventurous spirit and in his youth, he was an amateur boxer at Beatty Recreation Center. He was also a hair model, car wash technician, bar man and cook.
He joined the United States Army in the early 1950s and served some of his tour of duty in Germany and Korea. Gordon loved watching baseball, Discovery channel, eating Grandpa John's hot cracklins, watching train cars pass and spending time with family.
Always a hard worker, Gordon worked two jobs most of his adult life. After he retired from the U.S. Postal Service and the Columbus Public Schools, he continued to work at Buckeye Steel, and as a Gas station technician with Sunoco as well as a custodian for Master Clean where he won a trip to the Dominican Republic. Gordon also worked as the craftsman rebuild and compactor technician for Sears Eastland.
Gordon was a quiet, no-nonsense type of man with a seemingly tough exterior, but he had a heart of gold and a genuine spirit for welcoming and helping others. He loved talking about his children, grandkids, other family members and his life experiences. As proof of his generous heart and kind spirit, he adopted many into his loving circle - children, nieces, nephews and friends.
Gordon transitioned from this life on Sunday, February 13, 2022 with his loving family and friends at his bedside. He has now joined those who preceded him in Death - parents, Gordon and Bessie; bonus parents, Marie and George; daughter, Deborah (Lewis) Hunt; son, Gordon M. Lewis, Jr.; sister, Camilla (KK) Bentley; brother, Robert (Bobby) Thompson; and niece, Angel.
He leaves to cherish his memory: Daughters, Keyatta (Kwesi) Derrick, and Judy Hatcher; Sons, Roy Scott, Quantez (Shaneka) Lewis, and Cortez (Jessica) Peyton; former wife of 17 years, Vivian Lewis; brothers, James (Sarah) Lewis and Robert Lewis; sisters, Lula Eubanks and Geraldine Dunson; son-in-law, Thomas Hunt; grandchildren, Antuane, Charles, Gordon, Tileauna, Leilani, Cortez, Jr., Cor'rae, Corinne, Sir'Joshua, Mi'Lynn, Quantez, Jr., Ma'Layah, Kayle; special great-granddaughter, Dominique, and a host of other great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
