Martin Finkelstein Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jefferson Funeral Chapel - Alexandria on Mar. 3, 2025.
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Martin N. "Marty" Finkelstein, who peacefully departed this world on February 27, 2025 at the age of 71. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication.
Born on February 3, 1954 in Brooklyn, New York, he had a love of basketball in his youth, which continued throughout his life. He began his early career as a letter carrier. After graduating college and graduate school, he joined the Federal Aviation Administration as an accountant and had a special flare for financial system programming, shaping the agency's early financial systems. He progressed to the position of Deputy Director, Office of Financial Management. As he continued to advance in his career, he accepted a financial executive position at the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, later becoming its Deputy Chief Financial Officer. He spent his last couple of years before retirement at a much larger DHS agency, Customs and Border Protection. His particular interest throughout his managerial and executive years was efficiency and financial accountability, and he was known for collaborating to solve tough challenges and help others in their career development. His career spanned over 40 years dedicated entirely to public and civil service.
Above all, Marty was a family man. He cherished every moment spent with his loving wife, Allison Ritman, and he was a proud and supportive father to his children, Keith Finkelstein (Elizabeth MacGuidwin) and Stacy Miller (Matthew Miller), whom he raised with their mother, Maureen. He also embraced his role as a devoted stepfather to Charles Ritman (Mikaela Koetz) and Christopher Ritman and was a doting grandfather to his deeply treasured grandchildren, Adalynn Miller, Anna and Daniel Finkelstein, and Emma and Aurora Ritman. Whether it was sharing stories, offering guidance, or simply enjoying each other's company, he created lasting memories with each of them. Marty is predeceased by his parents, Nathan Louis and Charlotte Finkelstein.
Marty had a lifelong passion for sports and especially enjoyed closely following his favorite New York teams, the Yankees, Knicks, and Giants. His friends and family will smile reminiscing of him enjoying cruises, especially to sunny Caribbean destinations, and his favorite dessert treat, soft ice cream. And we will forever remember him for his kindness, quick wit, and his down-to-earth nature. Although he is no longer with us, his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered their condolences and support during this difficult time. Your love and compassion mean the world to us.
Rest in peace, dear Marty. You will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
