Philip McHenry Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home on Mar. 27, 2023.
Philip Clinton McHenry, 80, of Naperville, IL, passed away on March 18, 2023. He was born on December 7, 1942, in Mattoon, IL to Hannah née Roll and Albert J McHenry.
Husband of Peggy McHenry née Knicley, who he married on August 29, 1965, in Brocton, IL. Dear father of Jeffrey P (Kristen) McHenry and Beverly J (Chuck Ball) Kilgallen. Grandfather of Kylie and Cade McHenry and Taylor and Lindsey Kilgallen. Brother of Reta (Dwight) Salmon.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Philip grew up on a farm near Brocton, IL and graduated from Brocton High School. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in education from the University of Illinois, Champaign Urbana. He taught math at Glenbard East High School in Lombard, IL for 32 years, serving as department chairman for 10 years. He was also active in the Glenbard East Teachers association. Philip was treasurer of Faith United Methodist Church in Lombard for a time. Over the years he also worked as a substitute rural mail carrier for the Lombard Post office and taught math classes at the College of DuPage.
When Philip retired, he volunteered weekly at the Northern Illinois Food Distribution Center. He liked to garden in the rented park district garden plots where he also enjoyed the company of fellow gardeners. He loved sharing the vegetables he raised with family, friends and neighbors. He was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed taking family to the games. Favorite vacations were traveling across the country to National Parks, Disney World, fishing trips with co-workers and long weekends in Door County, WI in the Fall.
Family time was his greatest pleasure. Philip was the Dad and Grandpa who had time for his children and his grandchildren. Conversing with his children and sitting on the sidelines for grandchildren's school activities and sporting events would make his day. Good weather on Easter meant hiding eggs outside and Fourth of July was the day to freeze ice cream. And everyone sitting around the dinner table anytime was a blessing.
A summer graveside ceremony and inurnment will be held in Redmon, IL. for the immediate family.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Smile Train or Northern Illinois Food Distribution Center would be appreciated.
