Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 19, 2011.
Funeral services for Ruby Mae Bullard will be conducted Friday September 23, 2011 @ 2 pm from the First Baptist Church of Elk City with Dr. Russell Duck officiating. Interment will be in the Fairlawn Cemetery of Elk City under the direction of the Martin Funeral Home. Ruby Mae (Beanland) Bullard was born December 17, 1917 in Quail TX, to Curtis Mitchell and Susie Pearl (Scott) Beanland, and passed away September 19, 2011 at the age of 93. Ruby married her sweetheart, Hubert Bullard, on Valentine’s Day in 1941. Together they would build a full life. Ruby received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics education from Oklahoma College for Women and a masters degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. She taught math at Elk City Public Schools for many years before retiring in 1979. During her tenure, she was sponsor of the Gingersnaps and also was chosen as Elk City’s Teacher of the Year. Numerous students benefited from her tutoring over the years. Because Ruby believed in living life to it’s fullest, she filled hers with satisfying combination of faith, fun and family. She enjoyed her volunteer work at Great Plains Regional Medical Center and touched many lives through serving there. A life-long member of the First Baptist Church, she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and served on various committees. Always interested in creative outlets, Ruby took up painting and joined the Southwest Art Guild. She also enjoyed gardening, besting her friends in rook and bridge, and traveling, even visiting the Holy Land twice despite her family’s concern over turmoil in the area. She took great pride in the family home construction business. The street names in Elk City’s Fox Ridge subdivision pay tribute to her, as anyone who lives on “Ruby Road,” “Hubert Drive,” or “Bullard Drive” can attest. Her family was her greatest joy. She loved her family and grandchildren, whom she taught to make her famous chocolate chip cookies. As one friend of the family said, “We will miss the smart, sassy, loving, spiritual role model that Miss Ruby has been to everyone who knows her.” Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Hubert Bullard, and one brother Marvin Beanland. Survivors include: three children, James Pat Bullard of Oklahoma City, OK, Betty Souza and husband Dennis of Elk City, OK, and Mike Bullard and wife Ann of Edmond, OK; nine grandchildren, Rebecca Bullard of Little Rock, AR, Lori Roberts and husband Allen of Little Rock, AR, Kris Asher and husband John of Elk City, OK, Katie Hazeldine and husband Eric of Calgary, AB, Ryan Bullard and wife Angie of Oklahoma City, OK, Blake Bullard of Oklahoma City, OK, Kellie Fairchild and husband Josh of Boston, MA, Kylie Cordell and husband Jared of Edmond, OK, and Brady Bullard of Denver, CO; and 5 great grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Ethan Roberts, Dean Asher, and Finley and Drew Hazeldine. The family requests memorials in Ruby’s name be made to the Baptist Children’s Home or the charity of your choice.
