Violet Thompson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ratterman Southwest Funeral Home on Apr. 4, 2025.
Violet Thompson, 93, passed away on Tuesday, April 1st, 2025.
Serving the LORD JESUS was Violet and Cecil's life. They filled many roles at several churches over the years. We can only mention a few. While at Portland Church of Christ, Violet served several years in the Portland Christian School cafeteria. She was an avid fundraiser for the annual White Elephant Sale at the school.
At Shively Christian Church she became famous for her homemade rolls while serving in the Second Mile ministry providing hot meals for home bound members. Violet also helped raise funds for Deborah's Circle, which purchased uniforms for orphans at Grundy Mountain Mission. She loved serving in the Shively JOY (Just Older Youths) ministry.
In North Carolina, she found her joy in serving at Pitts Baptist Church. Those ministries included The Women's ministry, Sewing Hands, Friendly Neighbors, and more. Violet moved back to Kentucky when she was in her late 80s. That's when she became a member of Springdale Community Church. She looked forward to worshipping the LORD JESUS as often as she was able to be there.
Cecil and Violet's travels took them to the Caribbean, Hawaii, and Europe. In addition to her Bible which she faithfully studied, she always had a book or two she was reading. She was an extremely competitive player of many card games and dominos, she never gave her great- grandchildren any advantages because she wanted them to learn to play well.
Violet has endeared herself to many people in both Kentucky and North Carolina. She loved telling others how wonderful JESUS CHRIST is and how her life was made complete by HIS love.
She selflessly put her husband and children's needs first. She cared for children, all children, which is why she loved working as a teacher's aide and as a nutritionist at two day cares. She loved planning wholesome meals for children and advocating for more funds to improve the menu.
The Bible tells us to honor our father and mother. Violet was a wonderful example of what that looks like. For many years she spent quality time with her grandmother, mom, and dad. She was always ready to assist them when needed.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Cecil Thompson Jr.; and two sisters.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Journey (John); sons, Dan Thompson (Verlene), Cecil Thompson III (Rebecca), and Steve Thompson (Loree); brother, Ernest Balsley; grandchildren, Laura (Jon), Kristen (Aaron), Melissa, Benjamin, Christopher (Jaclyn), Aaron, and Scotty; great- grandchildren, Klara, Caleb, Grace, Gwen, MacKenzie, Paige, Blake, Bailey, Kit, and Seb.
Her celebration of life service will be at 11 A.M., Wednesday, April 9th, 2025 at Ratterman Southwest, 4832 Cane Run Rd. with burial in Louisville Memorial Gardens West.
Visitation will be from 3- 7 P.M., on Tuesday.

Violet was a special friend and a very loving and caring person. She was my "sent buddy"at Pitts Baptist many times. Prayers for all the family as you grieve her loss.
