Clarice Biggins Obituary

Clarice Franklin Biggins was born in Cornwall, Pa., July 13, 1918, to the union of Warner R. Franklin and Deco K. Jeffries. As a young woman, Clarice met and married Norwaird Stocking Biggins, a prominent Daytona Beach pharmacist, who preceded her in death in December 1992. This union produced two sons, Franklin N. Biggins and Warner K. Biggins (deceased). Clarice F. Biggins, a longtime resident of Daytona Beach since 1947, passed in Atlanta, Ga., on August 28, 2007. Mrs. Biggins was a graduate of Hampton Institute and held a master's degree in administration from Stetson University. She began her career in Volusia County schools in 1963 as a home economics teacher. She taught at Seabreeze High School and Campbell Junior High for nine years. In 1973, Mrs. Biggins became the Director of Vocational Education for the Volusia County school system. She was the first person of color to hold a director's position in the county school system. In addition, Governor Reubin Askew appointed Mrs. Biggins to the Prison Industry Commission in 1976. Clarice was a faithful member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, where she served on the Vestry, and was active with the Daughters of the Cross. In addition, Mrs. Biggins was also a longtime member of the Silverleaf Charity Club, Museum of Arts and Sciences, the Volusia County Women's Network, Delta Kappa Gamma, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the Daytona Beach Chapter of the Links, Inc. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Judge Franklin N. Biggins and J. Veronica Biggins, Atlanta; and two granddaughters, Dawn E. Biggins, Atlanta, and Kenzie M. Biggins, Washington, D.C. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Mary's Episcopal Church Endowment Fund, Daytona Beach, Fla.

To the family:

I praise God for the life of your mother and grandmother. She was a tremendous role model and simply an awesome woman of faith. As a child I used to go to Biggins & Meeks. I grew up in Pine Haven Projects on Cypress Street until my mother purchased a home in Cedar Highlands Subdivision in 1969.

We were truly blessed that Soror Biggins and Mr. Biggins passed our way in Daytona Beach. As entrepreneurs they were leaders in the community who were concerned about us and ensured that we lived life to the fullest. Both were encouragers and lived a life worthy of their calling. May she delight in hearing the words, "servant well done" from her Lord and Savior.

May you experience the peace that surpasses all understanding as you celebrate her life and memory.
