Moyle Green Obituary

Moyle "M.H." Hartwell Green Jr.

Raleigh

Moyle Hartwell Green Jr. ("M.H." or Papa) passed away August 17th, 2018 at the age of 93 in his home in Boylan Heights, Raleigh, North Carolina.

M.H. was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina on December 25th, 1924 to Moyle Hartwell Green Sr. and Ada Lawrence Green. In his formative years M.H. and his family moved to Raleigh where he attended the Boylan Heights School (Project Enlightenment) and Hugh Morson High School before joining the Navy in 1943. He served aboard the USS Rich (DE-695), which was sunk off Utah beach (Normandy) by mines on June 8, 1944, and received the Purple Heart. After medical leave he returned to WWII in the Pacific in the battleship USS Texas (BB-35). After the war, M.H. married Marie Lambert and opened M.H.'s Groceteria on W. South St. in Raleigh, which he ran for the entirety of his career. Not one to ever sit still, M.H. continued working throughout retirement on restoring the many properties he acquired in the community he loved so much. An avid, lifelong tinkerer and student, he also enjoyed caring for countless neighborhood plants, cats, and just about anyone or thing he thought needed a helping hand.

M.H. was preceded in death by his parents Moyle Hartwell and Ada Green, his wife Marie Green, his son Donny Green, and many faithful dogs. He is survived by his sister Cathie Ann Bower, daughter Donna Green, ex-son-in-law Rob Ward, granddaughters Jenny Fox (Harry), Mollie Ward (Daniel), Caitlin Ward (Matt), Tara Wilkes and Christina Varble, his great-grandchildren Edan and Conway, his beloved dog Buddy, and numerous friends and neighbors.

Family and friends are invited to a graveside burial service at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh on Wednesday, August 22nd at 11:00am.

In lieu of flowers please send contributions to the SPCA of Wake County or the Arbor Day Foundation. Special thanks to Transitions Lifecare and others for their support.

I am just now seeing that MH passed.
I lived on Florence St. and MH stopped to say hello. I told him I was working in RTP....he said, well, my Aunt's house is over there and we haven't found a buyer.
I had recently bought and moved to Boylan Heights, so I was not looking, but I said I would look for my friend. MH gave me a key!!!!!!!!!!!

After work one evening, I walked in Aunt Fannies' house and I Loved it!
I called my friend, but she had already found a new home.
Aunt Fannies' home was all mine! It was literally down the street from my job, only a few blocks.
MH put me in touch with his lawyer friend, who had almost been elected Mayor of Raleigh, but a very few votes.
We closed soon after.

(I am still at Aunt Fannies.)

MH was the BEST of humanity!
MH was a really GREAT guy!
What a character!

He will ALWAYS remain in my memory. Hard to believe he is no longer in Raleigh...but part of him is.....

Condolences to the family from your neighbors on Kinsey. I enjoyed the quick chats that your Dad, Grand-dad and Great Grand-dad and I had as I walked to and from the bus each day. He was a gracious man and a proud veteran.

Such a smile every time we met, every time we came into your store back in the 60's. LaRue Brannan lives on but will miss you just the same, so glad she still has the long-term memory. You made us laugh anytime we came in to "charge" something. We will celebrate the life you gave everyone you met. But so sad you're gone. Love you always, Linda Brannan Burton, still living in Tessie Booker's house at 912 (Boylan) Dorothea Drive.
