Renner, Sr.
Charles E. Renner, Sr., 80, passed away April 20, 2006.
He was a lifelong resident of Akron and a member of the First Congregational Church of Akron. Charles was a graduate of Buchtel High School in 1944 and The Ohio State University in 1949, where he distinguished himself as a member of the undefeated Ohio State Buckeyes 1944 Western Conference Championship Football Team. This team beat Michigan 18-14. He was also a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He was a veteran of World War II while serving in the U.S. Navy. He was recruited by famed football coach Paul Brown to play for the Great Lakes Navy football team. Charles was a member of the Portage Country Club and the Optimist Club, a longtime coach and board member for the West Akron Baseball League, a member of the Founding Committee of the Rubber City Open Golf Tournament at Firestone Country Club which evolved into the World Series of Golf. He enjoyed 55 years as a successful life insurance agent with Connecticut General and Northwestern Mutual.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Grace Beck Renner; brothers, John (Betsy) of Alexandria, VA. and Dan (Donna) of Valparaiso, IN.; sisters-in-law, Barbara (Bob) Glasener and Virginia Reichart, both of Toledo; sons, Charles E. Jr. (Kathleen) of Akron, Richard (Chris) of Shaker Heights, Ohio, Dave (Ann) of Naples, Fla., John of Akron, and Bob (Patti) of Fairlawn. He deeply loved his 13 grandchildren and delighted in watching their sports and activities. He leaves behind grandchildren, Charles E., III and Elizabeth of Akron; Ali, Jack, and Ricky of Shaker Heights, Ohio; Kelsey, Katie, Scotty and Camie, of Naples, Fla.; Danny and Drew of Akron; and Sammy and Teddy of Fairlawn. They will miss their Papa.
Services will be held 1 p.m. TUESDAY at the First Congregational Church of Akron, 292 E. Market St., Akron, with Dr. Jay Marshall Groat and Rev. William O. Rodefer officiating. Interment at Rose Hill Burial Park. Friends may call MONDAY from 4 until 8 p.m. at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd.
