Irvin Zigler Obituary

Irvin H. 'Sonny' Zigler

Irvin H. "Sonny" Zigler, 86, of Stow, Ohio, died peacefully while surrounded by his family on Jan 15th, 2015 following a short illness.

Irvin is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joan, and their children, Michael (Stacey) of SW FL, Robert (Katie) of Columbus, Julianne (Brad) Herrick of Cuyahoga Falls, and Joseph of Wadsworth; along his beloved sister, Mary Ellen of Green. His grandchildren were the light of his life: Emily, Owen, and Addison Herrick, as well as Trevor and Audrey of Cuyahoga Falls, Taylor and Jack of Florida, and Riley and Mackenzie of Columbus.

Born in 1928 in Akron to Elizabeth and Curtis Zigler, he graduated from North High. While earning a degree from the University of Akron, he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and Air Force ROTC. Then earned his meteorological degree from NYU and was subsequently stationed in Wiesbaden AF base in Germany as a Weatherman. In 1954, he was sent to Indochina as part of a historic French Airlift. After retiring as a Major, he taught briefly at Stow HS before earning a masters degree from the University of Michigan in 1960. He returned to Stow HS teaching math and science, influencing two successful generations of students, while being awarded Teacher of the Year in 1985. He retired in 1988, but continued his love of teaching by tutoring.

His love of running led to coaching of the Stow HS cross country team. He was also Head of the Math dept, a member of the Athletic Dept., and coach of the Chess Club. His avid love of photography chronicled the lives of his children and grandchildren for their benefit and that of generations to come. He was a member of St Joseph Church.

The family will receive friends on Monday, 5 to 8 p.m., at the Anthony Funeral Home MCGOWAN-REID & SANTOS CHAPEL, 247 Stow Ave. (at 3rd. St., one block north of Portage Trail) in Cuyahoga Falls. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Jared Orndorff on Tuesday, 11 a.m., at St. Joseph Catholic Church 1761 Second St. Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44221. Interment will follow at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or to St. Jude Research Hospital. Irv was the measuring stick by which all of his fellow teachers tried to measure themselves in the world of education. His dedication was legendary as well as his kindness to students and colleagues. My prayers and thoughts to his family and friends at this very difficult time. I know Irv is grading papers or preparing a lesson as we reflect on his fantastic life. May God Bless You Irv.

Mr Zigler was the consummate professional. He had a passion for teaching, for math and for kids. He was an incredible worker at his craft. He reached out to all of us. Mr Zigler was a primary influence to my choosing to become a math teacher. Back in the day, we had a "senior teach" day where we could sign up to teach a class. I signed up for Mr Zigler's Advanced Math class. He had me stay after school for some time the day before the lesson with him to go over the lesson. There was no way we were going to fall a day behind because I was teaching his class. I enjoyed teaching that lesson so much the next day, that I was inspired to pursue that profession. Thanks, Mr Zigler, from all your former students who you impacted. May the good Lord take you home to Him and keep His hand over your family during this time.

Mr. Zigler made math come alive for me in his class my senior year at Stow. It is because of him that I became a math teacher. Condolences to the family --thanks for sharing him with us.

My condolences to the families. Sorry for your loss. Mr. Zigler was one of my favorite teachers during the 70's. Mr. Zigler was a favorite teacher of just about anyone who was ever taught by him. He made math fun and took as much time as necessary to help each student understand. He will always be fondly remembered by his students. Rest in peace, Mr. Zigler.

Irv Zigler, math teacher par excellence! As a colleague in the tumultuous days of the late 60's and early 70's I recall Irv as a veritable rock of stability. His professional expertise, wise counsel, and dedication to the task of educating his pupils, however challenging the milieu, was an inspiration to we young teachers in the formative chapters of our careers.Of particular note, was the unstinting work ethic he exemplified-never an ungraded paper as he energetically multi-tasked before the concept was envisaged.Irv was a man of character whatever the venue...one who left his mark of excellence on all who knew him.May his dear soul reap the celestial comfort of a lifetime of dedicated service. My prayers and condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues who realize our good fortune to have been associated with Mr. Zigler.Farewell esteemed colleague!
