Robert Warren Obituary

ONEIDA >> Robert W. "Toby" Warren Jr., 76, of 5512 Main St. died peacefully Sunday, March 2, 2014 with his loving family by his side.
Robert was born on June 1, 1937 in Mansfield, Ohio a son of Robert W. and Vera Best Warren Sr. He came to Oneida at the age of 10 and was a graduate of Oneida High School and Mohawk Valley Community College.
On July 11, 1956 Robert entered the US Navy and served as a torpedo man on the USS Valador until he was honorably discharged on July 6, 1960. He then joined the US Navy Reserve for a period of two years. He was released from the reserves in 1962 in San Francisco, Calif. and upon his release he rode a Lamberetta motor scooter across country back home.
He married Dorothy G. "Gerry" Harrington on Nov. 28, 1963 in the Durhamville Baptist Church.
Robert had been employed for 37 years as a circuit analyst with General Electric in Syracuse retiring in 2002.
Robert was a member of the Durhamville Baptist Church, an 18 year member of the Durhamville Fire Department, a member and Past Commander of the Durhamville Veteran's Club and a member of the HAM Radio Operators (N2JU).
His outgoing personality and love of his community allowed him to be very instrumental in the construction of the log cabin at the Durhamville Elementary School. He was a multi gallon blood donor with the American Red Cross and was interested in and took part in many activities: bike riding, sailing, knitting, cards, riding motorcycles or anything on wheels and his trying to play a variety of musical instruments.
He will be remembered as being a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, uncle and friend by his wife Dorothy; his five children, Julie (David) Carnevale of Canastota, Kim (Jeff) White of Verona, Robert W. Warren III of Amboy, Kelly (Eric) Cardinale of Durhamville and Penny (David) Cornish of Taberg; four grandchildren, Benjamin and Matthew Carnevale and Jacob and Zackary Cardinale; two brothers, Ronald (Beverly) Warren and Jack (Barbara) Warren, both of Durhamville; two sisters, Susan Hubbard of Sherrill and Roberta (Charles) Baker of Verona and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Shirley Coe and Virginia Stauffer Butler.
As his final act of charity Robert has donated his body to the SUNY Upstate Medical Center Syracuse. A celebration of his life will be held at a time to be announced. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ironside Funeral home, Inc., 342 Main St., Oneida, N.Y. In his memory memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, 134 Vanderbilt Ave., Oneida, N.Y. 13421.

Like everyone that had the joy of knowing Toby, our lives are richer because of him. I was his next door neighbor, so you can imagine the stories I have of his parents, brothers, and sisters. I am so sorry that I just learned about this last evening from Neil Cole, Toby's brother-in-law. I praise the Lord that I will see him again one day. My prayers are will the entire family. I just heard, through an email from my sister, of Toby's passing. As the little sister of his best friend, I remember Toby more from my childhood as Paul's friend, but he became family when he married my cousin Gerry. I've lost touch with many people over the years of being a military wife. Somehow I know that if I had stayed in the home area, I would have gotten to know him better. Gerry, please know that you and the family will be in my prayers. Your cousin, Marcia (Marcia Harrington Gilbert)

I remember making maple syrup with Toby, sawing roof boards on the saw mill for the cabin, using my plans to build his sail boat, the antenna he built for his ham radio. The oversize chess set he carved from firewood...Toby was talented, he also built his own house! Prayers from Becky & myself for his family!

Julie, Kim, Toby, Kelly & Penny,

There are so many great memories of growing up with you all…your Dad was the life of many a Saturday night gathering - always at our house or yours. His laugh was infectious…and he was always smiling. We're glad we were able to see him from time to time in recent years also…he had a great sense of humor and a quest for adventure! So sorry for your loss…he will be missed. Our love to your Mom, as well.

With condolences,

I was so sad to hear that Toby had passed. I am praying for all of you for comfort. Toby was one of the neatest guys I had ever met. I have fond memories of the card games and late nights at the house. I remember seeing him ride his recumbant bike all the way to Syracuse to work! If you need anything Gerry, call me. 761-6331. Love you guys!

Thoughts, prayers, and hugs to all for all of you! When we were little we loved it when we were at a Aunt Bev's & Uncle Ron's... We'd go over and go sledding next to Uncle Toby's house with the rest of the Warrens... We spent so much time there - I think sometimes we thought we were Warrens too!??

March 5, 2014

Jack and Ron, my thoughts are with you at this time of sorrow, many memories will be a source of comfort at this time.

Sincerely,
Doug Shue

Dear Gerry and Family, In the days ahead you will be celebrating a life well lived and that is as it should be. Toby was one in a million and had that ability to tackle and complete any idea or project that caught his interest. From our days of "skipping school" to clean the "chicken coop" at grandma's farm to building a log cabin in the school yard. Toby will never be duplicated; but his kind heart and loving nature will live on in each of you. Our thoughts and prayers are with you always. Jerry & Gail
