Janice Elizabeth Griffin, a resident of Springfield, Oregon passed away on June 26, 2021 after a brave two year battle with pancreatic cancer. Jan was born September 12, 1954 in Klamath Falls, Oregon the third child of Alta and Bernard Griffin.
Jan grew up in Klamath Falls and was active in Girl Scouts, school band, and pep squad. She graduated from Klamath Union High School in 1972 and attended Oregon Institute of Technology, receiving an Associate Degree. Planning to pursue a library science degree, she moved to Eugene only to have the program dropped by U of O soon after. Instead, she began a 30 year career at the Eugene Public Library holding several administrative positions. Jan belonged to the Oregon Library Association and served in several offices including president. She received an award for her distinguished service in 2008.
Books and reading were always a part of her life as well as being the family's genealogy expert. She also enjoyed puzzles, photography, cross stitch and knitting. During her illness she knit over 300 hats for children in need. She was active in the Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Club and assembled an amazing collection of ornaments. Jan also loved to travel, especially to the Oregon coast and to visit family in Vermont and California.
Jan is survived by her sister, Cindy Crosby (Tom), brother John Griffin, nephews, grandniece and grandnephew, and many cousins. She will be greatly missed by her long-time best friend Kathy Fairchild. Jan's caring spirit, dry humor, easy laugh and love of family and friends will be long remembered by those who knew and loved her.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 17, 10:30 a.m. at The Congregational Church, 2154 Garden Ave., Klamath Falls. Please feel free to bring a photo or story to share at the reception following the service. I had the gift to meet Jan through LSST, Library Support Staff Round Table and then worked with others to form the Support Staff Division of the Oregon Library Association. I figure it's about 25 years or so that we've been friends, and several years ago I got the pleasure of getting to work with her at EPL. I will miss Jan's quick wit & sense of humor, her laugh, her can-do/get it done attitude, her integrity, and her thoughtfulness and kind, caring presence. I am grateful to have gotten to know her and that we became friends. You will be missed, my friend! <3

I met Jan when I joined our local book club. Although I was late getting to know her, she was a kind and gentle person to be around. I am so thankful to have had her in my life even briefly. My condolences to Jan's family and friends. She will be missed.

For over 50 years, Jan was my best friend, my sister from a different mother, my sounding board, my shoulder to cry on, my emotional wall who held me up and held me together. We grew up together. We shaped each others likes, dislikes, and personalities. We shared laughter, tears, fears, plans, travel, and so much more. Like the home we shared, she was one-half of me. For that I am blessed, and thank her from the bottom of my heart for all she's done for me.
