John Anthony Hartford Jr.

John Anthony Hartford Jr., 75, of Roanoke and formerly of Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, May 13, 2021 after a courageous battle with an extended illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Anthony Hartford Sr. and Dorrine Zell Hartford.

Surviving are his wife, Ann Sullivan Johnson; his two sons, Ryan Johnson Tamoria (Michelle) of Oxon Hill, Maryland, and Matthew Joseph Johnson (Melissa) of Littleton, Colorado; his grandchildren, Dakota Johnson and Maximus Tamoria; his brother, Mark Zell Hartford (Mary Lou) of Fredericktown, Ohio; sisters-in-law, Rosemary Sullivan and Teresa Dotson; brother-in-law, Patrick Sullivan; and nephews/niece, Vince, Jeff, and Carrie.

John grew up in San Bernardino, California and graduated from University of Southern California where he was in the ROTC program. After graduation, he entered the United States Air Force where he was assigned to the Office of Special Investigations and was stationed in Fairfield, Connecticut, Ankara Turkey, and Washington, D.C.

Following 12 years of service in the Air Force, he joined the Intelligence Community where he held numerous senior level positions involving national security. John had over 38 years experience of combined military and civilian service.

After retirement, John and Ann moved to Smith Mountain Lake, where he spent twelve years volunteering for Lake Christian Ministries. He was an avid reader and Trojan fan.

The family would like to thank the Carilion Hospice Team, especially Michele, Allison, Kristen, and Clara for their tireless support over the last six months. Also, a special thanks to Janet and Margaret with Visiting Angels.

A Memorial Service will be held at 12 noon on Thursday, May 20, 2021 at Oakey's South Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in John's honor to Lake Christian Ministries, Moneta, Va. Online condolences may be shared with family at www.oakeys.com.

I remember working with John on preparing our budget and I remember enjoying his company when he came to visit us in SC and the wine festival in the rain in VA. A wonderful man and many fond memories.
