Peter and I had many good times together in the General Assembly and later when he was presiding in court here in Iredell County. I will never forget how he and Lucy welcomed us into his home at Cooleemee. We have a picture of my grandson sitting on Peter's knee taken about 4 or 5 years ago. Peter took to email a few years ago and we corresponded that way. He was always up to date and knew his state and local politics. I will miss him, but I am glad I knew him.

I am so very sorry to learn of Peter's death. I have many happy memories of visting him and Lucy and their family at Cooleemee.
As a young boy in the 50s , I remember I was particularly impressed when the Hairstons acquired a large herd of sheep, and then named each of them after a family friend, including one for my father and one for my mother. I concluded that my parents must be very good friends of the Hairstons, and likely rather important themselves to have such large and impressive animals named for them.

Peter Hairston's death was a great personal loss for me and it is a major loss to his community and state. It was the reorganization of the N. C. Museum of Art that brought the Hairstons and me together. We were also in on the inception of the Winston-Salem Gallery of Fine Arts (now Southeastern Center of Contemperary Art), and Associated Artists of N. C. I also enjoyed the gracious hospitality of the plantation, and I treasure my friendship with Peter and Lucy.

I served in the legislature with Peter Hairston, visited with him and his wife, and, like him, spoke at annual meetings of the Hairston Clan. He was a great man, both humble and proud at the same time.
I, too, shall miss him.

As a student at Wake Forest Law School in 1974, Judge Hairston invited me and a few other students to tour Cooleemee. Over drinks, he gave us a wonderful overview of this treasure of a home and his family's history. I have always remembered his kindness and interest in us as future North Carolina lawyers. Later, I had the priviledge to appear and argue cases before Judge Hairston. Each occasion was a pleasure. He was a gentleman and a scholar.
