Though death is universal, our shared grief at JT's death is personal. His family, friends, and colleagues, for whom JT was intensely present during his life, are expressing their unique experiences of him. These expressions are his most powerful memorial.

JT was born to Margaret Jonell Russell (who died June 24, 1998) and John Chipman in Salt Lake City, on March 24, 1983, joining his brothers, Sam and Dave. He died May 3, 2022, in Granite Bay, California at the home of his aunt and uncle, Joanne and Paul Russell, who opened their home and lives to him throughout the pandemic.

JT graduated from Berkeley, attended Tufts, and, at the time of his death, was a PhD Candidate in philosophy at Stanford, where he loved teaching, mentoring, and engaging with his colleagues and whomever happened by in extended conversation (often monologue) on philosophy, politics, and his many other interests.

His dad, step-mom Bonnie and her family, brothers, aunts, uncles, and cousins, sister-in law, Darcie Anne Lane, his much beloved niece, Violet Jonell, and his friend and honorary member of the Chipman family, Andrew King, have each been supportive constants in JT's life and his concern and thoughtfulness towards them have always been clear. He was loved and supported by many teachers and friends during his early years at Judge Memorial Catholic High School and First Presbyterian Church in Salt Lake City.
