In June of 2014, my wife and I moved into Syracuse, Utah, down around the corner from Russ Peterson and we were in the same ward with the Petersons until we moved down South in (July 2020).
When I first got going to church up in our ward in Syracuse, Russ Peterson was one of the first ones in Elders Quarm to introduce himself to me and shake my hand. We had alot in common, love for horse riding, love for the outdoors and Police work.
Russ was a faithful LDS church member, who had a deep love for his wife and kids and he was a good cop and in law enforcement for the right reasons and therefore Salt Lake PD, Chief Brown and fellow officers at SLPD along with the citizens of Salt Lake were all better because of Sgt. Petersons hard work and his genuine love for people.
Russ and I would see each other on occassion on grave shifts when he was a K9 Officer with Salt Lake PD and while with his dog Tex, he would at times respond to calls around or near apartment communities we secured in downtown Salt Lake and we would see him and say hello. I use to joke with Russ at Church, asking him to please bring his Police K9 (Tex) on slow shifts during the week - and to walk Tex around ssomeof the apartment properties we had as a contract security firm that we always had serious issues at in downtown Salt Lake. Russ would joke back and say to me
"Tex and I avoid those not so great properties unless we absolutely get a call to go down to them". LOL.
I remember driving home from work at 4am and seeing Russ arrive home in his Police vehicle to go off duty. He was a friendly guy to see on duty, at church, or in passing while working in his yard.
I remember Russ talking about scriptures and bearing his testimony often in Elders Quarm and he was a great choice for Bishop Adam Suttlemyer to pick as his 1st Councilor a yr or so ago- which position Russ held still upon his passing.
When my family and I moved from Syracuse, Utah back in July of 2020, Russ Peterson was one of the many ward members and neighbors up there in Syracuse I missed the most. I want Russ's wife and children to know that my wife Kami Green and I will continue to keep all of you in our prayers and we express our love for all of you. I look forward to a reunion with Russ on the otherside down the road and I am thankful for our testimonies of the gospel. I know that Russ and Bishop Newbold are both watching over all of you and are carrying on the Saviors work on the other side!

Feeling heartbroken for Russ and his beautiful family. When giants and heros are taken home early it feels like the world has stopped. Russ was one of those giant heros and for a great many the world has stopped for a bit.
Especially his beautiful family.
It is my prayer that God's love and our own love for Russ will carry his wonderful family through these unavoidably rough waters and difficult times. Our memories of Russ and his example of what the Savior meant when he said love one another will be precious to all who have been loved by him.

Jan told me to share this memory because she loved reading about Nick after he passed. I remember when I was 7 years old, I was certain I was going to marry Russ (who was probably 15 at the time). He was best friend's with my older brother, Jake. He was always so nice and I thought he was so handsome. I would bring him stuffed animals and family pictures (cringe) and he would nicely thank me, he never made me feel dumb about it. One day, Bonnie pulled up in our driveway with a box full of items I had given Russ and handed them back to my mom. So embarrassing. Russ really was so warm and kind. He was loved by everybody, including the Fisher family. We love all of you Peterson's so much. Our hearts are breaking with yours.

Kim, my deepest sympathies. I cannot imagine how difficult it would be to lose a child.
I know that you will receive comfort as you have a strong understanding and belief in our Heavenly Fathers plan. I pray you and your family will be blessed with the peace.
