JOHN BOUTILIER Obituary

BOUTILIER, JOHN S. "MR. B" August 22, 1926 to February 19, 2012 Loving husband, father, and grandfather, remarkable teacher, athlete, boxer, artist, farmer, handyman, builder, golfer, party-giver, star-gazer, and hammock-swinger. A man who enjoyed life. John S. Boutilier, "Mr. B" to all his students, died peacefully on Sunday, February 19, 2012, at his favorite place - his home on an acre in El Cajon. John was born in Quincy, Mass, the second of four sons born to Frank Napeen Boutilier and Matilda E. MacDonnell. He was raised in West Roxbury, Mass. and attended Boston English High School where he participated in many sports. Upon graduation from high school in 1944, John joined the Navy and trained at Williams College, Great Lakes Naval Training Station and Ft. Pierce Florida, where he qualified to be a member of the Scout and Raiders, which later became the Navy SEALS. He finished his Navy service in Hawaii and witnessed the testing of the atomic bomb on Bikini Island. While in the Navy he began boxing for recreation - a sport he excelled in. With the GI Bill he studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Realizing that art would be his hobby, and not his career, he applied and was accepted to Boston University with a football scholarship. While a student there, he continued to compete in boxing matches. In 1950 he won the New York Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions. In 1951 he won the U.S. Amateur Light Heavyweight Championship. He graduated from Boston University in 1953 with both a bachelors and masters degree in education. His first teaching position was at Girard College in Philadelphia, a boy's boarding school for grades 1 - 12. In 1955 he headed west and accepted a position with the Cajon Valley School District to teach elementary school students. He purchased a small house on an acre of land in El Cajon and called it "The Lone Boot Ranch." In 1962 he married Betty Bjorklund, a Cajon Valley teacher originally from the Chicago area. Together they raised two children: Lisa Ellen, born in 1964 and Peter John, born in 1968. For 33 years he was a caring and creative teacher who fostered a love of learning by making learning fun. For most of those years he taught at Madison Avenue Elementary School in El Cajon. He retired in 1988 with special recognition from his students, their parents and his fellow staff. John loved his life with his wife and family at his home on the same acre of land he purchased in 1955. And he said that it was teaching that made it all possible. He will be missed by many. He is survived by Betty, his wife of 50 years, his daughter Lisa (Mark) Telles of North Tustin, CA, his son Peter (Gracia) Boutilier of Cabo San Lucas, B.S., Mexico, granddaughter Sophia Telles, grandson, John Peter Boutilier and granddaughter Jackie Boutilier; brothers Franklin (Barbara) Boutilier of Nokomis, FL, and Richard (Judy) Boutilier of Guilford, CT, three nieces and two nephews and many cousins in Northern Ireland. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Boutilier. At John's request there will be no service. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations can be made to Sharp Hospice Care, P.O. Box 1750, La Mesa, CA 91944.

I came from the other Boutilier's of West Roxbury, Mass. of whom we shared a common ancestor in Nova Scotia. I corresponded with John's brother Major Franklin Boutilier several times and exchanged genealogy information. Your father Napeen Boutilier was the Fire Chief of Boston Fire Department and my father was the Superintendent of Boston Parks and Recreation. I also went to English High School in Boston(even taught there for awhile) and boxed in the Golden Gloves. I still have some of Franklin's letters in my genealogy family book. I heard good things about all the four brothers. May God bless. Glenn W. Boutilier

The Boutilier´s were like a second family to me. Many of my teenage years were spent on "the ranch" where I boarded my horse. I also babysat Lisa before heading off to college. So many memories!

My sisters and I were neighborhood kids living across the street on Chesbrough Road in West Roxbury, Massachusetts and remember him as Jackie Boutilier the handsome golden gloves champion. We were always proud to say Jackie Boutilier was our neighbor. Jackie and our dad were good friends. I will always remember the big igloo type of snow houses Jackie and his brothers made in their backyard.

So sorry to hear of Boot's passing(belatedly). Jack was a person to be admired. I was a fan of Jack and his brother Frank. We lived on opposite sides of Boston but our paths crossed again in the navy where he built quite a reputation as a boxer. After our service years I saw Jack become a member of the only father/son AAU champions. Jack was the last AAU light heavy- weight champion. Besides his many admirable qualities mentioned by others he was a "special" human being. Condolences to unmet family members with a special "hello" to Frank.

Mr. B was one of my favorite teachers growing up. He taught my 5th grade class at Madison Elementary. I remember the kids who couldn't pronounce his last name calling him "Mr. Boot-in-the-rear" until he threatened to do just that to them. He made learning fun and I will remember him always.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this time.

I remember not just what Mr. B encouraged us to do but his homemade rootbeer. He was my 6th grade teacher at Ballantyne Elementary School.

Dear Lisa: Brother Jack was a most important role model for me in my life. He was always My Hero ! I was only 6 years old on xmas, 1937 and there was only one present for me under the tree on xmas
eve. Jack noticed the one present and he then went out and purchased 5 low-priced presents, wrapped them in fancy xmas paper and laid them under the tree for his little asthmatic brother. Jack was only 11 years old, but wanted to make sure that his little brother had several packages to open. I have never forgotten that xmas of 1937 !! He will never be forgotten !!

What a special human being and friend he was. My youthful knowledge was so expanded in his backyard with our families. From horses to homemade rootbeer... so many memories, all wonderful, most humorous. You are in our hearts and prayers.

Dear Mrs. Boutilier,
Mr B was my 5th grade teacher at Madison in 1978. What an amazing teacher, leader and kind hearted man who made you feel special.
He was my favorite teacher. He had so much fun with us playing and teaching. His crazy hotdog cooker(experminting with electicity),teaching us how to draw, playing ball with us,but most of all the smile on his face everyday when he would see our class.
Fridays were a day to look forward to,his old boxing matches.Fun times.
My heart broke when I heard the news. He will always be in my heart. He made a huge impact in my life!
Thank you for sharing such a wonderful Man.
Love and prayers,
Heidi Sorensen-DeSalvo(San Diego)

He was an unforgettable teacher, 5th grade, 1962. I remember this was the year he was getting married and our class had the pleasure of throwing him a little party to wish him well, my mother baked the cake. He was very cool and a great teacher - the kind one never forgets. He left an indelible impression on this student of 50 years ago. Rest In Peace Mr. B.

You brought joy to learning Mr. Boutilier. You introduced me to sports and made me and all your students feel special. We laughed with you every day and couldn't wait to see what you would come up with to make us get involved in learning. You made learning fun!!! You gave us more of your time after school to play baseball and run track. You were an amazing over the top and beyond teacher. Thank you Mr. Boutilier, Rest In Peace Dear Teacher… Peggy O'Hern

I was at a party a year or so ago talking to someone I'd never met. The conversation soon turned to something we had in common; Mr. B. He left a lot of great lasting impressions on me and hundreds of others in his time teaching. Madison elementary 5th grade class of '75.

Having a childhood wherein I spent a majority of my time at the Boutilier's is time I not only will never forget, but exaggerate greatly the stories of to my own children.
John created those stories treating me like one of his own. Teaching me lessons, feeding me from his garden, smacking me on the butt, putting me to work, and in general helping me grow up to be a good person.
I was incredibly fortunate to be able to partake in the Boutilier household.
Thank you John (and Betty) for that.
And thank you Peter and Lisa for sharing your dad.
He will be missed.

I so remember Mr. Boutilier, he was my 4th grade teacher. One of my fondest memories is when we made a contraption that ended up cooking a hot dog with electricity. Boy did it smoke.
My thoughts go out to his family.
