Wayne Zook Obituary

ZOOK, WAYNE OLDEN Wayne Olden Zook, passed away on December 14, 2002 at St. Paul ' s Convalescent Hospital in San Diego. He is survived by Crystal, his loving wife of 60 years; his identical twin brother, Dwight; his sons, Lee and John; and his grandchildren, Jill, Karren, Robert, Alex and Chris. Wayne was born January 29, 1917, and grew up in Abilene, Kansas where he became class president of his high school, played the lead role in the senior play, took second in the central Kansas league trumpet championships, and won the central Kansas league debate championships. He and his brother received their B.A. and MBA at Stanford University. At Stanford, Wayne took a second in the West Coast Conference wrestling championships. He also meddled in weight lifting competition. Wayne then moved to San Diego in 1941 where he began working for Consolidated Aircraft (later Convair) and met and later married his wife Crystal. Wayne became a senior estimator at Convair. He also served as Area Director for the National Management Association. Wayne became a Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 555 on several occasions. He also developed and managed the Point Loma Wrestling Club for junior high school boys. At age 47 he joined the San Diego Track Club and held National marathon records for 54 and 55 years olds. Wayne also became an avid amateur movie maker. He was a member of the San Diego Movie Club. He made river raft trips, which he often organized and managed, on the Rogue river, the Snake, the Salmon, the Colorado, the Omo in Ethiopia and the Watut in New Guinea. He made several award winning films of these adventures as well as other world travels in such places as Nepal and India. The family will hold a private ceremony at his home over the Christmas holidays.
