Genevieve O'Maley Obituary

Genevieve (Stanley) "Toni" O'Maley

May 8, 1922-May 28, 2013 Genevieve S. ('Toni') O'Maley, born in Sedalia, Mo. moved to Alameda in 1960, Navy widow of the late Cdr. Robert G. O'Maley, passed away peacefully at her residence Tuesday, May 28. A proud Midwesterner, graduate (Pi Beta Phi) of the University of Missouri, she served for a time before marriage as an AP journalist assigned to the White House during the Roosevelt years, later the Kansas City Star newspaper. That interest was set aside to raise a family with her Navy husband, who moved from Kansas City first to Ohio, then Maryland (Patuxent River) and New Orleans before retiring in Alameda. She served capably at the Alameda Naval Air Station Wives Club, the Alameda Garden Club, the Blossom Branch and the Alameda Women's Golf club for over 40 years. In her senior years she was a fixture on the Presidio Golf Course with the likes of Art Hoppe. A devout Catholic and Democrat, she volunteered her time, versatility and generosity to her parish church, St. Joseph's Basilica. As a mother, she evolved into an accomplished cook and convivial party hostess with many memorable gatherings in her Gold Coast home on Bay Street listening to swinging Big Band sounds; the baritones of Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole. A natural athlete (and pianist), she played golf and shot in the low-80s for years (though she could play tennis without a lesson). No matter the occasion she could be seen 'dressed to the nines.' As an accomplished, popular bridge player her group stayed loyally together in small-stakes competition over two decades. Her survivors include: son, Robert Garth O'Maley (wife, Carol), son Pit, daughter Georgette, and son Brian; her grandchildren: Shane O'Maley, Toni Marie Garber (Banales) (Jesse) and Daniel, Michael and Katherine Grace O'Maley; her great-grandchildren: Christopher, Michael and Matthew Banales of Los Angeles. Her ashes are interred alongside those of her husband in the Golden Gate National Cemetery. There will be a memorial Mass at the Basilica in the next two weeks; details in the local paper. The family wishes donations in her memory be made to the Alameda Naval Air Museum and the Alameda Hospital Foundation.
