Sheldon Markman Obituary

Sheldon I. Markman
August 7, 1946 - October 27, 2023
Sheldon "Shelly" Ira Markman, beloved prankster, died peacefully on Friday, October 27th with his family by his side. He was 77 years old.
Shelly was born in Brooklyn, New York, to parents Leah and Phillip Markman. He has been making people smile ever since.
After a childhood in Brooklyn and Long Island, Shelly attended American University in Washington, D.C. There he met his wife, Ellen Markman, with whom he later moved to Stanford, California.
In his long career designing and brokering benefits packages for small companies, Shelly was known for his warmth, reliability, care for his clients and expert knowledge. In his family and friendships, his generosity, kindness and humor made him the heart of every gathering.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen Markman, his daughter and son-in-law, Erin Markman and Olin Winn-Ritzenberg, cherished grandchildren Omri and Asa Ritzenberg, sisters Sandy Kuskin and Monica Rozin, brother-in-law Jerry Kuskin, sister-in-law Susan Mindlin, and a remarkable network of extended family, friends and colleagues, all of whom loved him dearly.
There are stories we could tell of extraordinary things Shelly did in his life-for example, driving by a burning building and stopping to run inside to help-but he will be most remembered for the specialness of his everyday interactions. When Shelly shared the news of his terminal cancer diagnosis with his community, he received countless letters and phone calls from so many people who loved him. (True to form, he joked: "If I knew people were going to be this nice, I would have gotten sick a lot sooner.") Notes arrived daily, for months, sharing sentiments of gratitude for his friendship and recounting funny stories. So many highlighted his warm presence, his generous spirit, and his unparalleled bear hugs.
He brought immeasurable joy to the world. His memory will be a blessing for us all.

I am so sorry to read of Sheldon´s passing. I have been his hairdresser for the past 15 or more years. He was one of a kind, a sense of humor that went beyond. One of his last visits with me he said, "hey I´ve passed my expiration date by six months" .... true Sheldon comedy. He will be deeply missed RIP Sheldon I will miss our monthly banter

Dearest Ellen and Erin,
Our hearts are crying with yours. He was my "baby" brother; a most wonderful addition to the Markman family.
A sweet, caring, supportive "mensch" (person) who could make you laugh you really wanted to cry; who could hold you up when you were down; who could make you feel like the most loved person in the world. They broke the mold after making you.
To say we miss you is an understatement -- there is no word to describe it.
Rest in peace dearest Shel.

We are here for you, Ellen and Erin, even though we are across the country.
Big sister, Sandy and bro- in-law, Jerry

Dear Ellen and Erin,
The 'giant' has left the world and left a giant void never able to be filled again. Shel was my "baby" brother; a gentle, loving, supporting "mensch" (person).
Always ready to be a help whenever needed; never needed to be asked- he knew it and was there. He could be funny, joking (sometimes you did not realize that he was actually joking).
His passing is so sad for us that there really is no word that could convey the depths of our sadness.
Ellen and Erin, know that we are here for you. Let us stay close, and, share our loss together.
Shel -- we miss you and love you deeply. Rest in peace, dearest brother.

Ellen and Erin your loving words of remembrance have captured the essence of Shelly. Upon meeting him at Erin and Olin´s wedding Carole and I felt immediately that we were old friends. He was so easy to laugh with, listen to, and share humorous exaggerations. Time and distance have not diminished our pleasant memory of Shelly.

Shalom,
