A wonderful father, grandpa, brother, uncle, friend and successful entrepreneur—Thomas Poon Key Lam lived a vibrant 79 years and passed away on February 20th, 2018 from cardiac failure. Tom was the eldest son of Lam Bong Cheung and Ku Sau Fong, and spent his childhood in China and Hong Kong. Always independent and adventurous, Tom immigrated to the U.S. in 1958 with all of his worldly belongings in three suitcases and $300 to his name. He attended Chaffey College in CA where he worked his way through school and, importantly, met his wife and the mother of his two daughters, Dorcy Go. Recognizing that education would fuel his pursuit of the American Dream, Tom transferred to U.C. Berkeley in 1960, earning a degree in Business Administration, and married his sweetheart, Dorcy in June 1963. After graduation, Tom began his business career at Cal Life Insurance, but always wanted "to be his own boss" and pursued a career in real estate sales and subsequently became a successful general contractor, building dozens of lovely single family homes in the Bay Area. With his strong entrepreneurial drive, Tom also launched many successful small businesses as varied as a chain of one hour photo shops and a sizable senior citizen's residence. He cared deeply about his local community and was a member of the Rotary Club, Lake Merritt Breakfast Club and the Wat Sun Service Club.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

Dear Mr. Lam,
I have memories of how wonderfully warm and kind you were over the years when I would see you every night when you picked up Rachel from gymnastics, when I hung out at the house and had dinner (always offering me Squirt), and fishing on your boat. Your smile truly went from ear to ear. You will be missed.
Love, Okashi

Dear Mr. Lam, Thank you for your warm heart, kindness, big laugh, and beautiful spirit. I was always impressed with your self-made entrepreneurial drive and I have such fond memories of you during our high school years and beyond! Luckily I can still see your big smile in your amazing daughters. You are loved and will be missed. Love, Lara

Tom was unequivocally the best friend a person could ask for. He had the most contagious laugh that would instantly brighten the mood of any environment. He cheered me up many times when I most needed it. I am forever grateful we crossed paths in our lives. He will be deeply missed!

I am deeply blessed to have known Tom, Dorcy, Olivia, and Rachel my whole life. Tom was like a second father to me and always made everyone feel good about themselves. His love will live on through his always kind daughters and spirited loving grandchildren. Love ❤ Devora

I never got to know uncle till much later in my life. But, when I did, I was always glad to see him again and again at the home of his daughter (my cousin) Rachel in New York. He was a sweet man, who had many stories about the Go clan, which was how our lives intersected. As an in-law, he approached our family temperament--which could go from loving warmth to volcanic in a moment--with a mixture of awe and humor. I will miss him a lot but will see him in the smiles and the kindness of Olivia and Rachel.

Your smile is your trademark. I think the last time we were together, we were at a crab feed. You enjoyed your food. Love to you and your dear daughters. ❤

My dad was a great man. His light shone from the inside out. His smile and sense of humor could power a whole city. There will never be another Tom Lam. Even in the face of declining health and long term illness; dad maintained his sense of humor and positive attitude. He was the best dad, grandpa, father-in-law and friend. Everyone loved him who knew him. Until we meet again, dear daddy.
