Steve was a long-time resident of Spokane when he passed on June 1 at the age of 65 after battling multiple health conditions.
Steve was born to Richard and Marjorie Cavalar(Peck) of Polson Montana. Graduating from Polson high school in 1974 going on to attend Gonzaga University. During his high school years, Steve would go on to compete for the all-American team playing basketball. His memory and details of the games and facts were astonishing. He could tell you the last 36 seconds of the basketball game against Troy for the state championship like it was yesterday. Living in Polson, naturally, Steve was a golfer. His love for golf took him to a position at Meadow Lake golf course where he would go on to meet his wife Kim. The two would marry in 1979 and go on to have three children Angela, Antonio, and Nicholas. Steve and his family resided for many years in Chewelah, working at Plum Creek in Addy. During this time Steve was always involved in some sort of sporting activities. Long before his children could even walk he was coaching others on a baseball field. In 1990 life brought Steve back to Spokane to build a joint business with his brother Cavalar Lumber. Steven and Kim raised their children in Mead WA. They lived on site of the business and spent many years dedicated to growing that business. All three of Steven's children were competitive athletes and spent many hours competing with Dad on the sidelines coaching and rooting us on. Although they divorced after 24 years of marriage they remained family and friends until the end. Steve met his girlfriend of 15 years Maureen Williams later in life. They spent several years traveling and exploring together. Lovingly known as Mo Mo. After many years of labor at Kaiser aluminum and then Quarry tile Steve was able to retire in 2020.
Steve's passion was by far sports. He loved them all. Not only did he compete himself in many sporting events as a child and an adult. He was always coaching or helping coach something. He didn't even have to have a kid on the team and he would offer. Steve loved to teach and share his love of the game. Another great love of Steve's was food. He loved to go out to restaurants but was an absolute sucker for a home-cooked meal. Steve had a loud infectious laugh. His laugh would light up any room and turn heads. He always found humor in the situation, appropriate or not. Steve had been known to play a hand or two of poker. He spent many hours enjoying the poker table and friends at Lilac Lanes.
Steve is survived by his three children Angela Cavalar, Antonio Cavalar, Nicholas Cavalar, and five grandchildren (Carter & Maddox Julien, Ryder Hansen, and Gracie & Seth Cavalar) sisters Marilyn and Michelle. Preceded in death by his parents Richard & Marjorie, Brother Rick, Uncle John, and partner Maureen.
Services and reception will be held at Sunset Chapel located in Fairmont Memorial Park 5200 W Wellesley Spokane WA on June 17 at 3:00 PM. Charitable donations can be made in Steve's honor to the organization Love 11. Help us honor Steve's love of teaching the game.
