Richard Nuzum Obituary

Nuzum, Richard Langdon Dick to his friends, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 19, 2013, surrounded by his family at home. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Bette, and his adoring sons Richard Jr. (Mari), Tom (Tami), and David (Olivia). He was the proud grandfather of Hallie, Richie, Katie, Daniel, Sarah, Taylor, Alex, Julia, and Sydney. Dick was born in Janesville, Wisconsin October 24, 1935 to Dr. Thomas and Dorothy Nuzum, now deceased. He was the fourth of six children and is survived by his sisters Priscilla, Gretchen, Sara, and Jill and by his brother Tim. Dick graduated from Carleton College in 1958 and began his career as a middle school science teacher, hockey and football coach in Minnetonka, Minnesota. In 1961, he began a six-year tenure as a member of Western Michigan University's Education Department. During this time, he earned a master of science and a master of arts degree from the University. In 1967, Dick moved to Maumee Valley Country Day School in Toledo, Ohio where he was a science teacher, athletic director, dean of students, head football coach and head baseball coach. He joined the faculty of Saint Louis Country Day School (CDS) in 1980 as a middle school science teacher for grades five, six, and eight. During his 24 years at CDS and MICDS, Mr. Nuzum was Class 8 Dean, as well as a football coach. Following his retirement from teaching, Dick worked in the Alumni Office. Dick will always be remembered for the way that he inspired his students in the classroom and on the athletic field. Wearing his heart on his sleeve, he showed openly that he cared deeply for his students' success; in doing so, he challenged them to do the same for themselves and for one another. Not only was he a dedicated educator, he was a mentor, a friend, and a role model of kindness, generosity, and love. Dick encouraged hundreds of students with frequent letters of support that spanned many years after they left his classroom. A passionate person, Dick was capable of both great joy and disappointment, but utterly incapable of bitterness. He was a person of great integrity. For Dick's family, his concern for his fellow man and woman was a natural extension of the affection and loyalty that he showed to his wife, sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren every day that they shared with one another. Services: Funeral service at St. Mark Presbyterian Church, 601 Claymont Ballwin, MO 63011 on Wednesday, 1:00 p.m. Interment Private. If desired, contributions may be made to the Richard L. Nuzum Scholarship Fund, 101 North Warson Road, St. Louis, MO 63124 or St. Mark Presbyterian Church. Visitation Tuesday from 3-8 p.m. at Schrader Funeral Home, 14960 Manchester Road Ballwin, MO 63011. The Coach was a leader of boys and young men. He was intensely committed to all of us, and I can especially remember, like it was yesterday, when he focused that intensity on me. Thanks for all you did for us, Coach Nuzum. Fraser McAlpine MVCDS '71.

Dick Nuzum will never ever be forgotten he has touched so many lives! He always had kind words to say and could brighten my day as soon as I saw or talked to him. His smile was contagious. His phone calls, letters, gifts and just his visits made me feel so special! I have so many memories of him that will last a life time. Bette and family thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing him with me. I know we are so very blessed for having Dick Nuzum in our lives. Love and prayers to your family!

Bette, Rich, Tom, and David, the whole Fouke family is so saddened by Dick's death, way too young. What a lovely, smart, and genuine man he was. We feel blessed to have had him as a friend as he was indeed a special person. But you know that already. All of us are thinking of you and send you all our sympathy and, of course, our love. Affectionately, Becky

January 23, 2013

Everyone in our family has been greatly honored to have known Dick and tremendously fortunate to have been able to tell him so over the past Christmas Holiday. The many teachers in our family have a favorite quote from Will Durant: "Educators should be chosen not merely for their special qualifications, but more for their personality and their character, because we teach more by what we are than by what we teach." By those standards, Dick was no less than a giant.

"Coach" taught me what it meant to strive for something excellent as a team member, and as an individual. Under his leadership, I experienced what it was like to have an "undefeated" season, as well as a season where wins were hard to come by; through it all, I learned to play with sportsmanship, and class - may God bless the family;

I am very sorry to hear of OUR loss. Coach was a great person. He was inspirational to all who were lucky enough to get to spend time with him. One of my fondest memories of MVCDS was my trips with him to the barbershop on game day to get his buzz cut cleaned up. He would sit in one chair while I sat in the next and we went over our defensive game plane per situation. He gave me respect and confidence and I am very proud to have had him as my coach. He inspired me to go into education and coaching. I wanted to be like him in that I wanted my kids to excel because they loved me as I had loved him as a coach. MVCDS 1970

Mr Nuzum was such a special teacher and mentor to so many young students. The time, attention and care he gave each and every one of his students was well beyond the call of duty! He never quit being that person when the school day was over, but instead would take the time to call each and every student on the team before a big game to wish them the best. All of the handwritten notes and phone calls through the years meant so much to our family. The world would be a much better place if there were more people who reached out and gave others so much of themselves. Our world and the community at MICDS was certainly a better place thanks to him!
Our deepest sympathis to Bette and his family. Dick, you will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

Let's see, where to start: push-ups in the hallway! Flying down the ladder at football games to grab someone's face mask and give them "instructions." The walk, the walk, the walk - could spot him coming (or going) from a mile away. The laugh. The head-shaking. The great joy he wore on his face when a job was well done. Michigan School for the Deaf - overnight, away games! Amazing, amazing man!

Dick was a dear colleague and friend. He touched so many lives with his kindness and he always had a positive attitude. I admired and respected him trememdously. I'll never forgot my first year at MICDS when I entered my room for the first day and there was a rose, from Bette's beautiful garden, awaiting me from Dick. I and others looked forward and were blessed by his act of caring and bringing a smile and feeling loved on those first days of school. He was alway there as a friend with words of encouragement. What a gentleman and best colleague anyone could ever be fortunate to have had in life. He was a role model for teachers, an inspiration for his students in his passion for teaching and coaching, and a wonderful family man. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. Our prayers to Bette and the family.

Dear Bette, Rich, Tom, David, and your precious families,

Our family has been touched by our dear friend Dick and his loving and kind family in so many ways. We will always hold closely the fun days of wrestling and watching our sons grow into talented and caring young men. Life is a precious gift, and with this gift, comes eternal life with our Heavenly Father. Bette, may it give you and your family peace and comfort that Dick adored you all. We loved when he spoke of his grandchildren and he would beam with pride. Dick is a true testimony of how one's life can have a positive effect on others. His integrity, love, friendship, passion, and joy radiated to all that met him. Dick will be greatly missed and will forever be a part of our hearts.
