James McCarthy Obituary

James R. McCarthy (Jim), beloved husband of Freda McCarthy, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at the age of 88 with his family by his side. He is the only son of the late James Beatty McCarthy and Tessie McCarthy. Jim is preceded in death by his loving wife, Edith Boesch McCarthy. Jim's devotion to his family was the essence of his life. He was the dedicated father of James P. McCarthy (wife Mitzi), Terry R. McCarthy (wife Nancy), Dr. Dan McCarthy (wife Deborah), the late Richard C. McCarthy (wife Rhea), Eileen McCarthy Martinez (husband Simo), and stepfather to Michaela Luke (husband Eric). Jim has 15 adoring grandchildren (Tracy Laiche, James McCarthy, Amy Arthur, Mandy Jaubert, Kelly Rabalais, Nancy Vedel, Scott McCarthy, Laura Campo, Shannon McCarthy, Aubry McCarthy Bryant, Randy and Edith Martinez, Amanda, Nicole and Ethan Luke) and 16 great grandchildren who continue to carry his smile with them. Jim embodied the zealous spirit of our nation's greatest generation. After graduating from Holy Cross High School in 1941, he left Tulane School of Engineering to volunteer when the United States entered World War II. He navigated 35 critical missions over Germany with the 390th Bomber Group, and survived being shot on his final flight. Upon returning from the war he had a distinguished career at South Central Bell, and retired as an executive with AT&T. Jim was selected as the Holy Cross Man of the Year and was honored for being a founder of the long standing tradition now known as "Holy Cross Family Day." He was a charter member of the Thebians Fraternity, as well as a member of the Kiwanis Club, The Marrero/Harvey Senior Center and The BellSouth Telephone Pioneers. Jim also served as the director of the Red Cross Shelter during Hurricanes Betsy and Camille. He will live on in the hearts of all who knew him and whose lives he touched with his laughter, kindness and generosity. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral services on Monday, June 3, 2013 at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St., New Orleans. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. followed by Mass at 12:00 p.m. in the Schoen chapel. Interment will be at St. Patrick's #3. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the McCarthy Scholarship Fund at Holy Cross High School. Condolences may be expressed online at www.schoencanalstreet.com.

Dear McCarthy
We are so sorry to hear about Mr. Jim's passing. He will always be remembered in the hearts of the entire Thebian group-adults and children for all his antics. He will always be remembered for his phrase, "Ain't this a kick in the head!" How can you forget someone like that! He will always be in our prayers.
Love,
Mike & Terry Heller and Family

Dear Danny,

Your Dad, my 'Uncle Jimmy' was a brave, big hearted, kind, funny man, and I know he will be missed by anyone who ever knew him.

It seems unreal that it was all of thirteen years ago when I showed up at your fiftieth, and he said, "Man, does seeing you bring back memories!" What a guy! Great memories of him, especially of his big laugh.

Give all my best regards and sympathies to Jimmy, Terry, Eileen and Debbie.

Your 'cousin',
Damon

I also worked with Mr. Mc Carthy at Bell South in Industry Relations. He was a great supervisor. He cared about everyone and everyone loved him. The Christmas parties at the office and the "The twelve days of Christmas" song were always so much fun. I thank God for the opportunity to work with him.

Mr. Mac was such an amazing man & great boss. I was the lucky one to work in Industry Relations for 15 years.
When Ms. Edie & Ricky were going thru their illness he still would listen to your problems, whether little or small & always had the right advice to give.
You never knew he was going thru such a hard time himself.
Our Christmas parties at the office was always so much fun...with him designating which parts to sing for the song "The twelve days of Christmas".
We got a belly dancer to come to Canal Place to entertain when he retired in 1984. Of course he had a blast!!!!
I am blessed to have had him in my life.
To Freda & family my thoughts & prayers are with all of you.
I'm just getting over pneumonia & can't make it for the service.

Jim was beloved by the whole Boesch family, his late wife Edith's sisters, brother and cousins and their kids. While this is a terrible loss for his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, they have to be proud of Jim's many contributions to his country, community and school as well as to their wonderful family. Our deepest sympathies to our McCarthy cousins,
