Joseph Artesi Obituary

Joseph A. Artesi, Sr.

Joseph A. Artesi, Sr. was born in Brooklyn, NY on September 2, 1940 and passed quietly on Sunday, August 30, 2020 while at home with his wife Carol A. (whom he has shared his life with for 31 years) after an extended illness.

He attended the St. Thomas Aquinas Grammar School and graduated Livingston High School. He later attended and graduated from the Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, NJ with a Master's degree in Biology and Chemistry. He also attended Kirksville Osteopathic School of Medicine.

He is the founder of The New Jersey Olympic Center and New Jersey State Black Belt Association where he taught hundreds of children and adults the art of Goju Ryu Karate. He himself was trained by the late Peter G. Urban, founder of Goju Ryu Karate in America as well as other great Masters and Senseis.

Joseph was an innovator and pioneer where he was responsible for having introduced several programs that were implemented into the training regiments of the New Jersey State Police as well as having presented legislation in the State of California.

He was very active in the City of Vineland where he also introduced martial arts and fitness programs that served people of all ages.

He is predeceased by his parents, Gioachino Artesi and Palmina (Silvestri) Artesi; his son, Joseph A. Artesi Jr. and Marty Manuel (special student).

Joseph leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Carol A Wood; people he considered his sons, Anthony D. Lingo, James Thornton, Keith Sharper and Eddie Andujar and a host of other people whose lives he has touched in one way or another. He will truly be missed.

Sensei Artesi Sr.'s name was introduced to me in the mid 1980s during training with Sensei John Touchton of Waverly Hall, GA. Sensei Touchton spoke of him with reverence, and I wish I had met him in person.

Mr. Joe Artesi was my karate teacher. Many years have passed, I haven't forgotten what a truly good man and great guy he was.

Remember Shihan Artesi from his participation in the tournament promoted by Preston Carter at the War Memorial Building.
Always a gentleman and would never hesitated to give me input even though I was under a different system and instructor.
May he RIP.

Mr. Artesi was my homeroom teacher at Bridgton High School... A great man and a great teacher of life... Malcolm Buck and I were his first Karate students when he moved to South Jersey to teach at BHS. We put on many karate demonstrations for organizations in the area back in 1966-67. Haven't seen him in a few year's but I still find a void in my heart for the man that gave so much of himself.

I met Joe back in the mid 1970's at the Jewish Community Center in Margate, NJ where he was teaching Karate to young children. I was a staff photographer for The Press of Atlantic City at that time. Joe and I hit it off and we remained friends for many years. Although our paths had changed, his wisdom and philosophy about life stayed with me to this day. I was so sorry to hear of his passing. Joe was a "one of a kind" person and all who were blessed by knowing him, are better for it today. Joe, rest in peace. If any of the family members of Joe would like to reach out to me, I still have the original color slide photos of Joe at the JCC in Margate from that time, if you'd like, I'd be happy to email them to you.

Sensei Artesi was my karate instructor and mentor from 1969-1973 when I was in my early teen years. I also studied under GM Peter Urban, Eddie Andujar and Marty Manuel at the Olympic Center in Bridgeton, NJ. GM Artesi was a major positive influence in my early years which have lasted throughout my life. His passing is a sad day to the many people that knew him. My sincere condolences to his family for their loss as well as to the Karate community of which he established. GM Artesi will surely be missed by all.

So sorry to hear about the passing of Sensei Artesi. While I hadn’t had the pleasure of seeing or speaking to him these last 25 years, his impact on my life is considerable. I always admired his sense of humor, work ethic and attitude. His dojo taught me discipline, patience and gave me the self confidence I was desperately lacking. I seriously wonder if I would be a husband, father and business owner if it weren’t for his influence during my formative years. To many of his students, he was much more like a father figure than a karate instructor and every one of us felt like we were family. I hope he has found peace, reunited with his loved ones and left knowing just how many lives he helped shape.

joe was a great guy. he had a great smile and a heart to go along with it. joe came to one of our blue and gold dinners one night [cub scouts-pack 138 in millville]. after dinner, he put on a show where he put me on a table on my back where he laughing put a blood stain towel over my stomach. he put a head of lettuce on my stomach and took a long sword and raised it above his head and cut the lettuce in half. i have a picture with my mouth open to prove it. joe will be truly missed.
