Richard Groth Obituary

RICHARD "DICK" ERNEST GROTH JR. Marion Richard "Dick" Ernest Groth Jr., loving husband and father, 68, of Marion, passed away on Friday, Feb. 19, 2021. Family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion. All guests are respectfully requested to wear a face mask and practice social distancing. A Celebration of Life service for Dick will be held in early summer of 2021 at Squaw Creek Baptist Church in Marion. Dick was born in Cedar Rapids in 1952, to Richard Sr. and Martha (Coberly) Groth, and grew up on a farm near Shellsburg. On May 12, 1973, he married the love of his life, Carol Anne Seng. They raised two children together, Scott and Lisa. Dick received his Computer Programming degree from Kirkwood Community College and worked at Rockwell Collins for 37 years. In his retirement, he drove a bus for Linn-Mar schools, greeting the children and youth on his routes by their names, playing music and brightening their day. Dick was a wonderful family man, a devoted husband to his wife Carol of 48 years, and encouraging father to his son Scott and daughter Lisa. Dick loved the great outdoors, particularly spending time in the Rocky Mountains looking for wildlife with Carol. He loved hiking and camping with Scott, vacationing and daily phone chats with Lisa. Fishing and rock hunting with his grandchildren were also favorite hobbies. Dick was known for sharing God's Word at every opportunity, his positive attitude, and always had the most welcoming smile. Dick was a devout Christian who put God first. He was a positive role model for many, and had a passion for serving in the AWANA and Sunday school programs at Squaw Creek Baptist Church. He also enjoyed many hours volunteering as a leader in Boy Scouts. Dick is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Carol Anne Groth of Marion; son, Scott (Nicole) Groth of Cedar Rapids; daughter, Lisa (Curt) Switzer of Lakeville, Minn.; five grandchildren, Emily, Chloe, Isaiah, Lucienne and Whittaker; one sister, Sandy Koppen of Shellsburg; one brother, Donald Groth of Marion; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Martha Groth; and three infant siblings. Please share a memory of Dick at www.murdochfuneralhome.com under obituaries.

Our sympathy to the entire family. My Dad (Darwin Coleman) and I both worked with Dick at Rockwell Collins in the IT department. He always had a smile on his face, and was one of the people you could count on to acknowledge your hello and have a friendly conversation. He was a dedicated programmer as well, someone you could count on.

Offering my sympathy and prayers for Dick's family. I worked with Dick off and on for many years at Rockwell Collins and always appreciated both his technical expertise and his kind and friendly interaction with everyone. I always knew Dick was a man of faith and he lived Christian virtues in the workplace. From his obituary, I learned how much his faith also influenced his relationships with family and community. May he rest in the peace of Christ with eternal joy. May his family and friends also find that peace, knowing that Dick made a difference in the world in many positive ways.

Our sincere apologies to the Groth family. Our sons grew up with Scott, and said Dick was a very nice, caring man. I remember Dick and Carol stopping at my counter in Younkers and chatting about our kids. We will be praying that God comforts you and brings you peace.

I am sorry for your loss. I didn't have the privilege of knowing him but from his photo I can see he had a happy life. My grandmother , Lillian, was Ernie's sister. I remember Uncle Ernie and Aunt Opal fondly and I was flowergirl at Dick and Martha's wedding.
