James Carlson Obituary

James H. Carlson, 70, of Grand Island died on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christ Lutheran Church. The Rev. David Wietzke will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Apfel Funeral Home.

Mr. Carlson was born on July 1, 1941, in Hall County to Adrian W. and Ruth Ann (Eaton) Carlson.

He married Betty Reimers on April 8, 1967, at Christ Lutheran Church in Grand Island.

Survivors of the immediate family include his wife; two daughters, Cindy Smith of Central City and Amanda Holmes of Omaha; a son, Douglas Carlson of Grand Island; a sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Jerry Downing of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and a sister-in-law, Glenda Becker of Grand Island.

Additional survivors include six grandchildren, Andrew Smith and Miranda Smith of Central City, Alexis Carlson and Kayle Carlson of Lincoln and Izaak Holmes and Mollie Holmes of Omaha.

James grew up in Hall County and graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1959. He entered the U.S. Army on March 13, 1964. He served with the 1st Division - The Big Red One - in Vietnam in 1965 and with the 16th Infantry Unit in 1966. He was honorably discharged in April 1966. He worked for G&S Tire for 22 years. James' hobbies included his love for the outdoors and antique cars. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Katherine Meyer and Carole Carlson; and a brother, Thomas "Eugene" Carlson.

Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later date.
