Richard Smith Obituary

Richard L. "Dick" Smith
New Britain - Richard L. "Dick" Smith, of New Britain, PA, passed away at 78 years of age, on Thursday, June 3, 2021, at Doylestown Hospital, with family by his side.
Dick was the loving husband of Sandra (Gross) Smith. They met while water skiing on the Delaware River, and would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary in December.
Born in 1942 in Philadelphia, he was the son, of the late Paul Smith and Dorothy (Smith) Rumpf, and stepson of Frank Rumpf. Dick grew up in the Newtown area, surrounded by extended family. After moving to New Britain, he graduated in 1960 from Central Bucks High School.
Dick's early working days were with The Intelligencer, in Doylestown, followed by Standard Pressed Steel in Jenkintown. Thereafter, he moved on to his wife's family's business, Theodore L. Gross, Inc. After learning all aspects of that enterprise and eventually becoming a part owner, he ultimately enjoyed being the business patriarch for more than 40 years. He loved his work, and never fully retired.
In his younger days, Dick enjoyed spending time on the river, and golfing. Throughout his years, he participated in weekly volleyball nights, was a Lenape Valley baseball coach for his sons, and loved attending CB West Football games. He enjoyed collecting Department 56 Dickens Village miniature replicas, and, more recently, model yachts. He cherished the time spent with his family at their houses in the mountains and at the shore on Long Beach Island, NJ. He is remembered for his kind, gentle spirit, watching his Philly sports teams, reading books, and playing his Uno game from his lounger.
In addition to his wife Sandy, Dick will be deeply missed by his three sons, Michael Smith (Sharon), Richard Smith (Natalie), and James Smith (Michaela), his grandchildren, Tina, Mark (Diana), Justin, Corey, Andrew, and Nathan, and his sister, Laurie Slimm (Ed).
Visitation will be held by the family at Shelly Funeral Home, 1460 Easton Rd, Warrington, PA 18976, where relatives and friends will be received on Monday, June 14, 2021 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM and Tuesday, June 15, 2021 from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Interment will then follow at Beulah Cemetery, in New Britain.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Dick's memory may be made to Village Improvement Center (VIA) c/o of Doylestown Hospital, 595 West State Street, Doylestown, Pa 18901. https://via-doylestown.org/support/support-the-via-donate/ Select in Memory of Richard. L Smith
