David Hoffman Obituary

David E. Hoffman, age 70, of Los Angeles, CA died peacefully on January 3, 2024, following a brave six-month battle with Glioblastoma. He was predeceased by his father Dr. Bobby Hoffman and his mother Phyllis S. Hoffman. David is survived by his devoted sister, Susie Hayman (Chris) and brother Howard Hoffman, loving niece Erica H. Driscoll (Brian), and cherished great nephew, Declan H. Driscoll. David was also fortunate to have countless friends, who he considered his family, in LA and around the world.

David was the Emmy Award winning creator and executive producer of "The Best Thing I Ever Ate" and "The Best Thing I Ever Made", the long-running, highly-rated franchise that aired on Food Network and Cooking Channel. As the writer of the best-selling humor book, THE JOY OF PIGGING OUT, he hit the road to chronicle food and food obsession, while eating his way across the country.

Between bites, he spent most of the last 30 years in television, behind the camera as a writer for a number of networks series ("Matlock," "Diagnosis: Murder," "ABC AfterSchool Specials") and more failed pilots than he cared to remember. On the other side of the camera, David was a feature lifestyle reporter exploring trends and popular culture with a tour of duty that included morning shows in Los Angeles on both ABC and FOX, a stint with "Good Morning America," and appearances on "The View."

The author of seventeen books about popular culture, ranging from KID STUFF (which takes a look at classic toys) to THE SAND BUCKET LIST (366 Things To Do With Your Kids Before They Grow Up), WHO KNEW, and LITTLE-KNOWN FACTS ABOUT WELL-KNOWN PLACES (a travel series covering the world's most popular destinations), David also turned his titles into brands. From Pigging Out, he assembled a $2.5 million licensing campaign that included greeting cards, calendars, plush, t-shirts, mugs, and magnets, as well as a line of kitchen textiles. He sold Kid Stuff as source material for two television documentaries, and with the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield, MA, he co-created and curated a 4500-square foot interactive traveling exhibition based on the book that toured internationally for 12 years. As the author of two novelty cookbooks with recipes from world-class chefs (THE EASY-BAKE OVEN GOURMET and THE BREAKFAST CEREAL GOURMET), he served as a media spokesperson for publicity campaigns for Hasbro, Quaker Oats, and White Castle.

A native of Richmond, VA and a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, David lived in the Los Angeles area for 50 years, where he liked to pretend that all of this was hard work. His quick wit and brilliant sense of humor remained with him, even during the peak of his illness.

David will be best remembered and endeared for his love of food (especially finger foods), his extensive knowledge of the best restaurants and diners everywhere, his long-winded phone conversations, and the thoughtful and caring nature he extended to his family, as well as his family of friends and their children. Aided by his steel-trap memory and huge heart, David knew best!

Donations may be made to the UCLA Brain Cancer Research Center in David's memory (https://giveto.ucla.edu/fund/ucla-brain-cancer-research/).

A celebration of David's life will be held in Los Angeles in the early Spring.

A Dodger game with David in the 90s... Happy Days xx

I sat in Dodger stadium last night worrying why I hadn't heard back from David. We went to a game together with my baby boy 20+ years ago and have celebrated our birthdays together since we both left Fox. I realized my fears this morning when I read that David's cancer moved quickly. We became friends at KTTV. He treated me like a little sister at Good Day LA and I will remember his kindness forever. I want to send love to his family and friends. I don't have social media, so I missed this horrible news. David spoke of you all the time, so lovingly and seemed to have friends in every city!

RIP Good Man - you left this world too soon. I will miss your spot-on restaurant tips and those long phone conversations... BTW your baseball buddy is getting ready to graduate Law School in two weeks. Life is a drumbeat of Joy & Sorrow... this news hit me hard.

With Love, Annamarie Griffin

Our condolences to all of David´s family and friends. It was such a pleasure to work with David and see his passion first hand. He opened our eyes to culinary America in words we cannot describe. I miss working with him terribly. I hope you all have great meals this year surrounded by loved ones in his memory.

Susie, Howard and family,
I struggle to find the words. David and I shared our experiences of Richmond and Wash U but those were just the foundation of a long and meaningful friendship. David gave so much of himself to others in so many thoughtful ways. This loss is too much. Lisa Lederer Trachtman

My heart is broken . My soul sad. Words fall short in expressing this loss of such a beloved and celebrated friend.
The precious and beautiful memories reflect a life of giving and sharing; of brilliance and creativity; of love and kindness.

Susie, Howard and family, my heart hurts for you. My thoughts and prayers will continue for you. This has been a devastating blow. Your family has endured much pain and loss.

David, you have been and forever will be remembered as a loving and faithful friend. Your books, scripts, "Pigging Out" stuffed animals, interviews, conversations, humor, and quick whit have given smiles, chuckles, and comfort to a world of fans, family, and friends including my kids, who adore you.
You have been my personal memory bank, consultant, news
analysis and social reporter. So,
until our next "catch up" --Thank You
Lynn

Susie and Howard,
The loss of a sibling must be unbearable. My heart breaks for you as well as Erica, Declan and family.
What a talented, kind, creative and smart guy. I have wonderful cherished memories of us growing up in the neighborhood together. One that outshines the rest was his love of chocolate chip cookie dough. Lynn and I would be baking Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookies and David would inevitably appear at our front door. With spoon in hand, he would snack on the dough as we baked the cookies. As years passed, our times of catch-up phone calls and visits were treasured. David was a deeply devoted friend, always making the effort to keep in touch.
As I mourn my special, dear friend, I raise my chocolate chip cookie in his honor to celebrate a life well lived and so loved.
With Deepest Sympathy,
Susan Challoner Duncan

Hi Suzie and Howard, The toughest part of living overseas is losing contact with family. But even worse is when you lose your family. And, it is a sad day for me knowing that one of my cousins is no longer with us. Where did all those years go, since Howard strolled down Fifth Avenue with Claudia and me? Reading about David´s achievements and experiences, we certainly missed out on a lot. Reading this obituary brought a smile to my face, as well as laughter. David´s humor lives on, that´s for sure. But there is mostly sadness with this news. Let´s hope we can rekindle the contact, Susie and Howard. If you are ever on this side of the pond, well, Germany is easy to find. Looking forward to toasting your brother together, over a cold Bavarian beer and a warm schnitzel. Thinking of you and the southern side of the family...John(ny) Enclosed are some pics. We have 3 kids and 2 grandchildren, Noah and Pippa, both born in 2023.
