JOHN LEWIS Obituary

John D. "Jack" Lewis Esq., 88, of Charlottesville Va., passed away at his home on June 11, 2021 after a decades-long battle with renal cancer. He was surrounded by loving family at the time of his passing.
Born in Wellsboro on June 17, 1932, to Elwyn and Lelia "Lee" Lewis, Jack graduated from Wellsboro High School in 1950, then attended Albright College in Reading.
After earning an undergraduate degree in Political Science and History from Albright, he went on to attend the Dickinson School of Law, where he met his wife - the then Nancy Brown. Jack returned to Wellsboro in 1958, where he served the community and outlying counties as an attorney for the former firm of Cox, Wilcox, and Owlett, and then with the firm Owlett and Lewis, until his retirement in 1990.
Jack is survived by his wife Nancy, currently residing in Charlottesville, Va., his son, John G. Lewis (Lourdes Lewis) from El Dorado Hills, Calif., and his daughters, Susan Lewis Varga (John Varga) residing in La Conner, Wash., and Sallie Lewis (April Hughes) living in Charlottesville, Va.
He married Nancy - the one true love of his life - in Ridgewood, N.J., on Aug. 9, 1958. Jack and Nancy lived in Wellsboro until 1992, when they relocated to Pinehurst, N.C. During those years in Wellsboro, he was devoted to community and business development, understanding that the beauty and grandeur of this small but charming town could and would be a draw for new businesses and industries.
Jack and Nancy enjoyed several years of golf and relaxation in both Pinehurst and later in Henderson, N.C.- as it was a true dream-come-true for Jack to be a part of these historic golfing meccas. His former Tyoga Country Club "foursome" (he, along with Don Fryday, Bill Francis, and Neumann Peterson) travelled to Pinehurst almost every year to golf from the 1960's through the 1980's, and returned with far more stories than under-par scorecards. Those were several of the close friendships and moments that gave Jack incredible happiness.
Jack's life was driven by his love for his family and he did not hesitate to express that love up through the final days of his amazing life.
A private celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 17 at the Wellsboro Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that people make donations in Jack's name to the Wellsboro Cemetery Company, P.O Box 777, Wellsboro, PA 16901.
